Underwater photographer takes the Sony Xperia Z1S for a dive among manatees
Sony's Xperia Z1S landed in the US last month as a T-Mobile exclusive. It’s quite similar to the Xperia Z1 that’s been available internationally since late 2013, thus offering a 20.7MP rear camera in a waterproof body.

The smartphone’s IP58 certification allows users to take it 5 feet underwater - and that’s exactly what Florida-based photographer Carol Grant did recently. She used an Xperia Z1S for a photo session of unusual models: Florida manatees, which are among the world’s largest freshwater mammals.

Carol Grant says about the Xperia Z1S that it's "easy to hold while snorkeling. In addition, the long battery life is a definite plus."

The Z1S’ camera performed pretty well underwater, as you can see for yourself in the gallery below. According to Sony, all the images are “completely unedited”, “taken straight from the Xperia Z1S shooting in Intelligent Auto mode.” Obviously, when viewed in full size, the photos lose a lot of detail, and noise is visible in some areas. Still, being able to take photos underwater with your high-end smartphone is something!
