Sony Vice President talks about the Xperia Z4 smartphone, says the Z3 series is still doing very well
While Sony didn't announce the rumored Xperia Z4 smartphone at MWC 2015 this month, it introduced the Z4 Tablet, thus indirectly confirming that there will be a Z4 handset in the future. To further confirm the upcoming arrival of a new flagship smartphone, Tim Harrison, Sony Mobile's Vice President of Global Communications & PR, recently told British website Trusted Reviews that the "Z4 is the next-generation of product that we’ll be announcing."

The Sony official didn't say exactly when the Z4 handset would be released, but he mentioned that the company hadn't moved to a 1-year release cycle - thus, we should expect to see the Xperia Z4 hitting shelves before September (as you may know, the Xperia Z3 was introduced in September last year).

Speaking of the Z3, Tim Harrison says that the entire Z3 series (including the 5.2-inch flagship model, the Z3 Compact, and the Z3 Tablet Compact) is "doing really well in the market, and there is still quite a considerable amount of interest in those particular products."

Another Sony official, Pierre Perron, Vice President for Western Europe, told The Inquirer that the company won't launch a new flagship smartphone "just for the sake of it."

The bottom line is that, for now, Sony can't tell us when the Xperia Z4 will be released, but it's likely that this will happen in the summer - just as previously rumored. The new flagship smartphone should be powered by a Snapdragon 810 processor, and might have to versions: one with a 1080p display, and another one with a Quad HD (1440 x 2560 pixels) screen.

'The Elemental' design looks stunning- would love to see it! Add: - wireless charging. No more fumbling to find the right hole after a few sherbets ;) S6 has it. Lose the generic magnetic pins and generic accessories which have served their purpose. - contactless payment. Really want to start using this. iPhone 6- and lo and behold, S6!- have it: bring on wallet-less commuting. - USB Type C? (ditto re. finding the hole^) Keep: - having become very relaxed with my Sharp Aquos around water, I now consider waterproofing indispensable. Can't believe the S6 has dropped this, leaving Sony as (rightfully) the only serious player outside of Japan. History would point to an S6 Active: history would also point to it being an ugly unidentical twin. - superior sound quality. - battery life (prioritise over screen definition). - gaming functionality. Improve: - camera. As so often pointed out, should be a market leader here. Overdue! - fat-bezelled or just sharp-edged? The Z3 has a better screen-to-body ratio than the S5 & S6, and the M8 & M9 (phones which are generally perceived as having good STB ratios, or good design, respectively- iPhones don't even merit a mention re. STB ratios), yet continues to attract sizeist criticism (due to the rectilinear top & bottom edges and the relatively sharp corners of its stand-out monolithic design, which give it the illusion of being fat-bezelled?). On one hand, Sony are one of the few manufacturers who can equal Apple on aesthetics, and I'd rather they stand out from the generic brigade. I'd also rather they kept the waterproofing and the front-facing stereo speakers, both of which presumably add to bezel girth. I've enjoyed each design iteration of the Z series and don't think they should stray from it until new technologies allow/ demand it. I'm not sure those corners and top/bottom edges can be softened/ more rounded without losing the iconic design? No doubt they've considered it. On balance I think I'd prefer Sony stand out from the crowd, so perhaps the only solution is to keep the shape & just cram more screen in, after all. Obviously a personal thing- just some food for thought..

Many people want to switch to the SONY but are waiting for the Z4. The problem with SONY delaying is that these people, many of them, if there is no showing, or idea of availability before April 10, they are tied into contracts, so they will end up re-contracting with SAMSUNG...it's a later model than the Z3, with a better screen etc. If SONY is serious about competing, they need to release the Z4 HEAD ON with Samsung and HTC and release now or very soon. For the moment they are competing with Apple by releasing in September, as well but companies like Samsung are the ones that SONY must beat. IMO delaying is only helping to keep SONY as a minor player INSTEAD of the major player in smartphones, that they SHOULD BE!

If they can bring their Mirrorless ILC camera goodness on the Z4, introduce some very competitive mid and low end phones, fix customer support issue, Sell it to more carriers (for those US folks out there), ditch out the 'biannual phone cycle' and most importantly, rev up the advertising. They're surely going to be profitable soon.

Put an ir blaster in the damn phone, then I'll probably give it a chance! It can be a deciding factor when buying a flagship since LG, HTC, Samsung have it and offer quite similar experience except Sony and which costs more!! C'mon put the IR Blaster, it won't hurt your remote control sales! Was a deciding factor when I was searching last year, but decided to wait for this year's flagships!

Flagship phones are getting more and more expensive. Thus its harder to buy one. Sony should really exert all their effort and tie up with carriers so more people will be able to use their phone.

Wish they finally add a fingerprint scanner. And that terribly small power button is begging for a redesign.

The power button is actually great, ddistinctive and comfortable... On the other hand I actually dislike the button location on galaxies I always meant to press volume and actually turn off the screen, opposite location sucks sucks...

And an option for real 99% copper and pure Australian brass, or even better would be, rhodium silver, stainless steel 616 the pure utmost, with 72 layers. Not these cheap pathetic fake wannabe.

You're basically asking them to increase the price of their gadgets by investing on another metal producing factory. Plastic sandwiched with gorilla glass is good. It's just that Samsung made plastic look cheap with their S5 back design.

They don't use gorilla glass, but "Dragontrail glass" which is better than Gorilla glass, but beneath sapphire.

Two resolution versions seem wise, hoping they keep or augment battery capacity. I'd choose the 1080p Z4 anytime and laugh at SGS6 owners when they crawl desperately to the nearest power outlet just as iPhone users do.

Love the Z series but find it comical that they blurred the pics when it basically looks the same as previous iterations.

SD card slot + 64GB Class 10 SD card for less than $45 = ~75GB total of usable space. That should be plenty for 98% of people.

Even 32gb sd is enough for non-techie people. Selfies don't take much space and facebook is compressing their uploaded photos so no need for too much storage for these guys.

I like big games, Real Racing 3- 2.3 GB, Asphalt 8 Airborne 1.5 GB, Nova 3-1.6 GB, Dungeon hunter 4- 1 GB, larger internal is better for me

Stupid Sony should've made the Z3 with the option as the same features, but on a 4.3, with 3gb Ram, and S805.

There is also Z3 version with 32GB internal storage. And since both versions support SD card up to 128GB it is really minor issue for those buying "lesser" one.
