Sony Hong Kong now says Sony Xperia Z2 is delayed until June
The delayed launch of the Sony Xperia Z2 has become a major problem for the Japanese manufacturer. After all, this particular model is expected to take on competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One (M8). Early news about the delay had the phone launching in late April/early May. Nearly two weeks later, Sony U.K. was telling retailer Clove not to expect delivery of the handset until May.

But even that time frame might be too optimistic. Sony Hong Kong is now confirming that the flagship phone won't be released until June. This has to be disheartening for those who saw the phone unveiled at MWC in late February and have been patiently waiting for the release of the Xperia Z2. In the U.S., there is speculation that the phone will be a Verizon exclusive with a Q2 launch.

Sony might have boxed itself into a corner. With the Japanese manufacturer releasing a new flagship model every 6 months, by the time the Xperia Z2 sees the light of day, its successor could be due. Remember, Sony Mobile’s Creative Director Kurozumi Yoshiro called the Xperia Z2 Sony's flagship model for the first half of the year. If the delay stretches out any longer, buyers might decide to wait for the Sony Xperia Z3 which would force Sony to take a hatchet to its pricing for the Xperia Z2. Shortages of parts needed for the device are being blamed for the delay.

No matter how good a device you put out, if you can't execute the release properly, it will struggle for success. I really hope Sony learns something from this, because they are almost certainly going to lose sales to Samsung, and potentially to LG as well. They really may want to re-think their 6 month strategy.

Yes, Jellmoo, your thinking is sound in my mind. It seems as if the release loop did not consider material management. That seems odd for a Japanese company as they are so good at material managment. Perhaps upper management doesnot comprehend anything but the urgency of deliverying as management may only be connected to marketing and assume everything else can magically happen. By going back to an annual cycle, they run the risk of losing market share over the short term, but if they provide a very real (deliverable) reliable, user friendly and technically performing (features truly satisfy user's needs) cell phone then the market may wait. Certainly apple users wait. willingly. I like your thinking jellmoo

Misleading crap. The way it is written suggests as if Sony is delaying the Z2 for all markets and everyone is affected? U gotta be kidding me, the Sony Z2 is already readily available for sale in my country at $328 with a 2 yr contract ever since the last weekend and my friend is already using it LOL. That's Hong Kong's problem and NOT everyone's.

It isn't though. It's indicative of a problem that Sony has when it comes to execution. The device has not seen widespread release, and it still doesn't have details as to when that may happen. Devices like the M8 and S5 are being launched with good execution, hitting their markets quickly and on multiple carriers. Sony still doesn't have a plan announced for the US. And rumours of a Verizon carrier exclusive don't help. Heck, here in Canada it will be a Bell exclusive, with rumours pointing to a May launch, but nothing definitive. Sony is struggling to get this device to market, and until they manage to solve that problem they won't be a competitor in the high end, regardless of how good their device may be.

UK based and getting mine next week! All major partners are due to have the device available next week and that mean all networks, Carphonewarehouse and Phones4U. I guess Sony did not anticipate the demand for this device....Nevertheless, I would suggest the unfortunates wait as this is way better than plastic phones out there. Only rival for build quality is the M8!

Get the S5 like a champ and never look back. I doubt anyone spending a week with it would take it back, let alone think of another phone, design or other 3rd world problems. You'll even forget you're using a phone.

I do interested in S5 too, but I'm more inclined to take device that is good for playing music, thus Z2 with it's stereo & nc is my first choice.

By then people will be waiting for the Galaxy Note 4, Nexus 6, and the iPhone 6. If the Z3 is released in Q3-Q4 of 2014 its SCREWED. I hope Sony makes an intelligent choice.

Sony is not that strong in Hong Kong so the delay will not hurt that much. Having said that, sony still have a long way to go if it want to catch up to Samsung with this kind of problem.

If Sony would at least confirm what their plan is for the U.S., I would be happy to wait another month or two for this phone. I'm on Verizon so I think I have the best chance compared to other carriers, but in an ideal world I would hope that all carriers get this amazing phone.

Damn you Sony, you must not delay the release of such a great phone. It will hurt you, just saying.

Wasn't Eldar Murtazin the 1st one to expose this a few weeks ago? Funny how everyone conveniently forgets that part after bashing his tweet. :)

Wow that sucks. The only phone even remotely exciting this spring and it's not coming. June will be optimistic. Watch for Q3/Q4 in the states and by then it's a gen. behind.
