Samsung Netherlands: No Marshmallow for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S slates

Samsung Netherlands: No Marshmallow for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S slates
Two years ago, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S series brought some high-end specs to Sammy's tablet line. Both the 8.4-inch and 10.5-inch models are powered by the Exynos 5420 SoC, which carries an octa-core 1.9GHz CPU and the Mali-T628 MP6 GPU. When the slates were launched in 2014, they came pre-installed with Android 4.4.2.

During the Summer of last year, both versions of the tablet were updated to Android 5.0.2; at that point, it seemed inevitable that the tablets would receive the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. In fact, earlier this year benchmark tests of the tablets surfaced with Android 6.0.1 running the show. Rumors had the update taking place in the current quarter.

But the Facebook page belonging to Samsung Netherlands revealed some rather dour information on Saturday. According to the site, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 will not be receiving Android 6.0 after all. This might be a bummer for those who own a Galaxy Tab S slate. But even if the Android roller coaster for these tablets ends at Lollipop instead of Marshmallow, the Galaxy Tab S models remain quite  serviceable devices.

Of course they're not.

I am not surprised as well. Samsung has a long record in screwing over their costumers when it comes to updates, especially those who buy anything that isn't a Galaxy S or Note model. I paid nearly $1700 for the Galaxy Nx, and it is still stuck on 4.2.2 Had the Galaxy Camera, K Zoom, Tab 3, and yup, never got upgraded. I have the Tab 4 and Tab S 8.4 atm, and again, they are also forgotten by Samsung. If it wasn't for their kids mode and amoled panels, I would definitely look somewhere else when I shop for a new tablet next time. Now let's wait and see if they ll screw us over with the S7, almost 20 days now, and we are yet to receive any update that brings the latest software features that were introduced with the Note 7.

Stop being their fan boy. I already decided not to pay Samsung over the top price tag because their product is not worth that kind of price. Once a new product is launch, all OEM would want you to dump your existing device and buy their new one. So if you want to be a fan boy be one of your own wallet, buy want you need at lowest rock bottom price.

How am I being their fanboy? I wanted a digital camera running on Android, and the best options were the Galaxy offers. Then I wanted a DSLR running on android, and the only option was the Galaxy NX. As for their tablets, Kids Mode is a must for me. I got the Nabi tab for my daughter, and it was underpowered and software support was worst than Samsung's. That's for my kids, as for me, amoled panel is a must on a tablet. Flagship wise, I tried the HTC A9 and M9+ before getting the S7 Edge, and while I loved the A9, I still missed lots of the software features that come packed with the Samsung devices. As for smartwatches, while I initially loved the Gear S2, the apps and most importantly watchfaces offered in the Galaxy Apps store were enough for me to forget about it and ended up using it way less than I use my two Huawei Watches.

Lol, it's funny that these days, being neutral and criticizing something magically makes you a fanboy. Especially in Samsung articles, they can't take anyone criticizing their precious Samsung devices. Don't get me wrong, I actually loved the note 7 but I criticized it for being not as scratch resistant compared to note 5 and a bunch of fanboys started attacking me. Anyway, I get you man, I had a tab pro 8.4 which is stuck on KitKat officially. Didn't even get lollipop, the Nexus 5 with the same processor but released earlier got marshmallow already, this is just Samsung not caring. They seem to think initial sales are more important than the long term sustainability and support, let's see how far this business model gets them.

Indeed. Samsung fanboys are getting worse and more annoying than Apple fanboys these days. Even Apple fanboys are getting more notorious and hypocritical than they were few months ago. Anybody knows a better site with good comment section? I'd go to gsmarena but their comment section sucks. And suggest a site that covers all smartphone platform.

Try AA, you will find trolls, but rational people outnumber them

I like AA. Not regular but I read their articles and comments from time to time. But it doesn't cover all platforms. Anything that covers all?

AA does cover all platforms, it's not the same old AA that only covered Android and only Android. Tehcnobuffalo is also a good option.

Still mostly Android though but I'll look into it more.

I agree. I am one of those who hate putting a screen protector or dress my phone with a cover, yet those defending the Note 7 weak glass, ask people use both rather than admit for once that Samsung screwed up with using GG5 before testing it. My sister has already canceled her pre-order, and unless it turns out to be nothing but a bad patch, then she will have to stick to her Note 5.

I was Samsung fan boy. I bought their Note 2, Note 3, Gear watch, Tab Pro 12.2, Tab S LTE 8.4. Felt good buying it during their launch as Samsung give me freebies like a HomeSync, spare battery for my Note 3, free book cover for my Tab Pro 12.2. Anyway, up to a point you need to decide for yourself whether its worth paying for Samsung asking price. I bought XiaoMi Redmi Note during one of their flash sales, a capable phone for a quarter of what I would have to pay for a Samsung device. Last gen Nexus also offer good value for a lot less. My disappointment with Samsung slow or no update allow me to break the Samsung fanboy mold which is a good thing for me. Nowadays, I just buy a low cost last gen Nexus, I think the Nexus 6P is about ripe for the picking.

You might consider yourself a fanboy for buying their products, but I have a different definition for a fanboy. I don't consider myself a fanboy because I dont blindly defend them, even though I buy their products. I would have loved to get the Axon 7, but it's not available in my country. And as for prices, Samsung prices are cheaper than both Sony and HTC, atleast during the 1st weeks their flagships gets released. As of now for example, you can get the S7 for $510 in my country, where as the HTC 10 will cost you $585. But yeah, while Samsung deserves the success they are enjoying with their flagships, I hope they get tarnished in other areas, specifically the low end and tablets department. They treat their costumers like crap, and I would love it once I see their profit gets a hit, because their arrogance need that.

i agree with all what you said about updates except for the last point .. so you are expecting samsung to send a major UX update (within the same android version) within a month or less ? we all know that these major UX update (if samsung will update the UX) will be included in the next major android update , which is in this case android 7, which will not be coming for at least 3 or 4 months from now yes samsung previously updated the note 1 UI to the note 2 UI within the same android version (ICS) but that was the only time samsung did it and it was for germany only, then when android 4.1.2 rolled out for the note 1 and s2 it brought samsung's note 2/s3 UI to them .. unfortunately samsung never did it again ( i mean literally the whole UI with all new features), but it did bring some of the new features to the older devices (check note 4 marshemellow update) , which is what is going to happen to the s7 next major update

If someone on XDA was able to port the new UI in less than 3 days, Samsung has no excuse left for them to not deliver their latest UI almost immediately. And we all know Samsung will take another 3-4 months to give us S7 users half of these features, half at max.

that is why i started to hate android you pay premium price but you will never get any support and the fans will say android 5.0 is stable no need for an update look at windows tablet or IOS tablet .

Well, it's not android's fault as a whole because most manufacturers update their flagships about until 3 years from release, but clearly Samsung doesn't care, they push out gazillion devices so they can't be bothered updating each and every of them. I bought my note4 in 2014 October and I am pretty sure nougat 7.0 will be the last update it will get, if it ever gets it at all. That's the only reason Samsung phones depreciates faster compared to most flagships is because the lack of support. But I am still gonna have to go for a note 7 this year because iPhone 7 looks like gonna be s**t this year.

never get any support? while they get update for the whole 2 years? and $400 for this tablet isn't premium price.. iOS tablet -> even if they get iOS update after past 2 years, its just version number update (plus some cosmetic update), that tablet won't get some cool new features like newer models Windows tablet -> its easier since manufacturers didnt need to make custom update for each individual model of tablets, notebooks, and PCs.. and it isnt like MS releasing new OS each year..

thats not an excuse for not giving update my tab s battery backup has significantly reduced after the lolipop update and samsung never bother to giva a patch update. ive been expecting it to get MM update now they altogether abandoned the tab s. its always better to buy a windows or ipad over any android tab

Deflection at it's finest (bring the other two OSes into a discussion when things get hairy.....the Android fanboy motto).

that is not an excuse i do not like IOS but i forced my self to buy i pad pro 9.7 because in the end i am just student and i can not afford upgrading my tablet every 2 years so i need a tablet to get supported for 4/5 years and ya i bought it with 500 $ from best buy same with galaxy s7 edge ( epic phone ) but you know it is just supported for 2 years and xda will not make any custom rom for it buz it is exynos

Dude, 400USD for a 8.4 inch tablet isn't a premium price? I though it's competitor which is the iPad mini cost the exact same and both of them are defined as "premium" in this category. It's a shame it won't even get marshmallow update. For the record, it didn't even get 2 years support, it only got a little more than a year. Getting the marshmallow update would have meant it got 2 years update, mind you marshmallow was release a long time ago. Go ahead try to defend Samsung now, lol, Samsung fanboys are becoming way more toxic than Apple fanboys these days.

Sadly, Android tablets have become an afterthought. Unless you're looking for a super low cost solution and can live with a limited update path, iOS and Windows just seem poised to offer better solutions when it comes to premium tablets.
