RIP, TouchWiz! Long live Samsung Experience

RIP, TouchWiz! Long live Samsung Experience

The end of an era is upon us - Samsung has finally phased out TouchWiz as the official moniker for its in-house Android skin. From now on this one will be known as Samsung Experience. This change was made official alongside the recent Nougat beta that rolled out to the Galaxy S7 recently - it arrives with Samsung Experience 8.

Truth be told, Samsung has not officially referred to its interface as TouchWiz for a long time, but if you tinker with your phone a bit you will quickly find out that the stock launcher on Sammy's phones is called "TouchWiz Home".

Interestingly, Grace UX also seems to be getting the boot and is quite unlikely to be featured on future Samsung devices. As a reminder, Grace UX was the UI present on the Galaxy Note 7, but it definitely looks like Sammy is trying to get rid of everything Note 7-related as soon as possible.

TouchWiz's first appearance was on the Samsung Galaxy S in 2010, and regardless of the name change, Samsung's interface will hopefully remain one of the more feature-rich Android spin-offs.

About bloody time... When you hear about Touchwiz, the mind unintentionally 'fabricates' a vision, a vision of a laggy OS with a TON of bloatware and dark ugly themes and cheesy and cheap looking animations... Your mind just can't help it...! Even though Touchwiz has come a long way in all those years... Just compare Jelly Bean vs. Marshmallow and you'll get the pciture... And the Nougat based Touchwiz... Ahem... Samsung Experience is looking sleeker than ever... Oh well... G'Day!

Your mind maybe. When I hear the word TouchWiz, I simply know you're speaking of a Samsung Galaxy device. No more or less. You've simply trained your feeble mind to consider old TW devices, because I guess you don't own anything from the Galaxy S6 and forward. Each Samsung UI has had a name change since the S6. Samsung like was said, has never used the TouchWiz moniker officially. The Grace UX on the Note 7, I have to say is the best looking non-intrusive skin I have seen on any devise. This is coming from a person who loved Sense UI for several years. I think with the Note 7, the UI finally has matured to a nice look. I still don't like the color choices over all, though I understand that lighter colors are better in the eyes for a device you may stare at for hours. Also, according to this -http://www.techtimes.com/articles/179326/20160926/samsung-galaxy-s7-s7-edge-to-get-galaxy-note-7-grace-ux-via-android-7-0-nougat-improvements-incoming.htm - the S7's will also get the Note 7's Grace UX, no matter what they call it; is what it is. Samsung isn't distancing itself from the Note 7. Its the best phone they've made to date. The next Galaxy S/Note will follow in most of its footsteps as every previous model did.

Well... Monsieur Techie, I do happen to possess a Samsung Galaxy S6 (Non-Edge, of course) with Android Marshmallow on board...! G'Day!

I will stick with stock Android until Samsung gets it together and makes an interface that isn't bloated.

You actually use android at all?

I've been using Android since the Droid days, kiddo.

The UI is bloated. When was the last time you used it? Oh wait! I am willing to bet you've never used it. Glancing a Samsung phone at a store, isn't really using it.

Aye absolutely. Done with my Note 4, whatever my next phone is it won't be anything TouchWiz. God this thing is AWFUL.

I love how so many people seem to think touchwiz is this monstrous laggy garbage pile...based on early pre-S3 versions despite that Samsung has been improving it dramatically. Ever since about the S5/S6 it's actually been on par if not faster than stock Android but yet everyone keeps praising stock as faster & touchwiz as the laggy POS they've been told by Apple that it is

It is...!

It needs an overhaul. Using TouchWiz is like pouring cold molasses in 0° weather.

No, l think the first smartphone to have the TouchWiz UI is the i900 Omnia. Back in 2008 when Microsoft's mobile OS(Windows Mobile) can utilize custom UI like the TouchWiz.

This is a very good thing if true, touchwiz is the only fault on most Samsung phones.

Great. Hope it doesn't lag and hiccup like the older versions.

Knowing Samsung, that seems highly likely to lag and hiccup.

Too many ads phonearena. 2 full screen ads in the middle of reading an article on top of having 20 - 30 smaller ads that stay on the page. This site is turning into trash.
