Nokia leads the way in indoor mapping
According to an infographic put out by Nokia, the Finnish manufacturer l
eads the way when it comes to inside mapping. In 2012, Nokia's Destination Maps shows 4,605 venues, or inside locations. Nokia has mapped out stores, malls, airports and transit hubs. The latter three locations started getting tracked last quarter. The largest area of coverage is North America with nearly 3,000 venues mapped, followed by Europe, Middle East and Asia with over 1700 inside locations accounted for in Nokia's Destination Maps.
Why is it important to have these venues mapped? According to Nokia,
people spend 90% of their time inside, and that figure is rising. Altogether, Nokia has 235 square meters of inside locations mapped. As for the future, the last "frame" shows a roller coaster and Ferris Wheel which means that Nokia will probably be mapping theme parks soon. NAVTEQ, the company that powers Nokia's maps,
started inside mapping earlier last year with over 200 of the largest shopping centers in the U.S. included.
