Android Nougat confirmed for the Samsung Galaxy S6 family, Note 5 and others
by Damian M. / Jan 19, 2017, 4:28 AM
In early December we saw a Nougat-powered Galaxy Note 5 make an appearance on the benchmarking service GFXBench, so we assumed that the device will get updated at some point. It appears that we were correct.
According to a press release by Samsung's newsroom, the following devices will get updated to Android Nougat “within the first half of this year”:
- Samsung Galaxy S6
- Samsung Galaxy S6 edge
- Samsung Galaxy S6 edge Plus
- Samsung Galaxy Note 5
- Samsung Galaxy Tab A with S Pen
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 (LTE unlock)
- Samsung Galaxy A3
- Samsung Galaxy A8
That's great news for a lot of Samsung users, and although it was expected, this is the first official confirmation we get that older flagships will get the taste of Nougat. However, when it comes to the tablets and the Galaxy A3 on the list, there are many different models. Samsung has released different A3 models for 2015, 2016, and 2017, yet it has failed to specify which of the three devices will get updated to Nougat.

Sony have updated to Nougat three generations of flagships (including two year old tablet) already, as well as their latest upper mid-rangers. They will proceed with updating even the low mid-range XA family. This year they are far ahead of Samsung.

Seriously Samsung only 8 devices will get nougat from you? Yet phonearena isn't going to criticise you? Sony has updated what like 10 devices yet this site was reporting it in a negative way and why can't the Note 4 get nougat from Samsung? The 805 can run nougat the nexus 6 got it so why isn't the note 4 on the list? I now see why ppl stick to iPhones cause at least they get updates why they shell out big bucks the 2013 5 s is on ios 10.2 but a 2014 note 4 with a capable processor get no love that's not cool at all.

older??? oh, do you mean the 4s? yeah, i really wanna see samsung push marshmallow update on a galaxy s2, dont really care if its laggy, just wanna see them even try to do it. Note 4 is more than capable of running nougat, so I dont see the problem here. Note 4 released the same year as iPhone 6 plus, and it got the iOS 10 update, it runs fine on it. Not saying without hiccups but hell a lot better than samsung just not caring. Next time, try to hide you fanboy-ism a little better. Even the sony xperia Z3 is getting nougat soon, which is running snapdragon 801, Samsung just dont really care here.

For the quantity of devices offered by Samsung, this is sure a small list... I'm sure not everybody will be aware of the software version their device is running or even be interested in updating the software (if applicable), those are the perfect customers for Samsung, they keep launching new models with their Touchwized-Android version and ever forget to update them at all. But there are some user that are aware of software updates and wants the latest of them, I'm one of those, that's why I went for my Nexus 5X, I think I will change it in 2018 for a new Pixel or a Nokia (If they don't blow it), who knows :).

This is so sad. An Apple iPhone or a Google Pixel is the way to go. Nougat came out last August.... What s**tty service for such expensive phones. Regular timely updates should be such a basic thing for everyone smh
