37% of Android users now enjoying version 2.1 of the OS
Roughly a month ago a fragmentation chart was published on the AndroidDevelopers blog, depicting what percentage of users runs each version of the Android operating system. Back then, only about 27% of all Android users were running the latest version 2.1, while a considerably bigger part of 38% was still stuck with the now aging Android 1.5. Things were even more confusing for developers, as another large part of customers (about 31%) was running Android 1.6.

Now, a month later, Google has updated its chart so that developers can have a clear view of what approach they should pick when creating a new app. According to the new numbers, Android 2.1's customer base has now boosted to 37.2%, followed by 34.1% for Android 1.5 and 28% for Android 1.6. This clearly shows the direction things are heading, but is still not very developer-friendly.

Actually, we can expect things to get quite messy, considering that giant Froyos are now hanging around the Googleplex. What this means is that Android 2.1 will soon be pronounced dead (figuratively speaking), and users of capable handsets will have to wait for another few months till they finally get their update to version 2.2. What we hope for is that this won't happen right before the launch of the next platform version.
