Is this the Sony Xperia Z5?

Is this the Sony Xperia Z5?
Just last week, the Sony Xperia Z4 become official. Now, we are passing along what is alleged to be a picture of the Sony Xperia Z5. Earlier this month (even before the Xperia Z4 was announced) we passed along speculation about the fifth-generation Xperia Z handset that could arrive in the fourth quarter of this year if Qualcomm has the Snapdragon 820 SoC ready by then.

From the picture, we can see that the rear camera will be placed on the top left of the phone, where it has been. The side of the device appears to be metallic. The photo was found on a Weibo site out of China, and the posting mentions "Type-C" which could refer to a USB-C port. This will allow users to plug in a USB-C connector with either side of the plug facing up. The posting also shows the number "9" which could refer to a September unveiling for the phone.

Other rumored specs include a 1440 x 2560 resolution screen, a Snapdragon 820 chipset with 4GB of RAM inside, an improved rear camera (although still not equipped with OIS), the Qualcomm Sense ID fingerprint scanner, and a new design. The latter doesn't look terribly apparent from the leaked photo, but then again it is hard to judge when looking at a picture snapped by Mr. Blurrycam.

Xperia Z4.5 - Its what the Z4 should have been, but you have to pay more for it. Yet other option offer these specs now. Shame on Sony.

The Z4 is only a Japanese release... think about it as the Galaxy S5 Korean exclusive version...

They have to do something more advance for the international market for sure... Hopefully this is it, and if the rumours are true, then I will look forward to it.

No point arguing with a Samsung shill like techie

the z3 is still a flagship worth buying so it makes sensefor sony to wait till q4 or 2016 for the newer flagship , with all the issues with the SD 810.

if you want battery life and SD card slot then it's still the best phone on the market. especially the z3 compact which offers really good bang for buck.

with a few tweaks to the camera, it's actually competitive. but battery life is excellent and unmatched unlike galaxy S phones.

Now I get what sony is up to! They think that if they start bringing out a phone with '6' in name, they will get the market? isn't that obvious?!

haha

This pictures shows nothing that says it is the Z5. It could be a Z3 for all we know.
And i am pretty sure that Sony will deliver something new in terms of design with the Z5.

Unless you live in Japan, you are pretty much unlikely to get your hands on the "Z4"...guess you could import it! The point of this would be its sale to the international market given a June 2015 release would mean 9 months since the Z3 and September 2015 would a good year down the line! So there.....

So they are going to keep the Z3 for the international market until they announce the Z5 in September and release it in October and have the Z4 with 810 and it's improvements just for the competitive homeland. Makes sense, they've just split the two flagships a year to different regions or more like Japan and International.

That looks interesting. It could be lighting or my eyes playing tricks on me but the pictures make the back looks slightly curved. Like an HTC 8x.

Suck T C is the last company Sony should be influenced by.

You do remember the Xperia Arc series...? Sony was doing curved back then so how exactly would this be being influenced by HTC...? Plenty of phones with concave/convex backs abound already....!

I remember the ARC series. I actually had an Xperia S which was also curved. Now that I think of it, the ZL had a curve too.

That said, that does look more like an 8x than any of the curved Sony phones.

So if camera position is same as on z3 or z4 you end up thinking that there are not some radical desing changes. Look at s6 it has camera on same position as s5 but owerall desing is diferent.

So, Sony fans have to wait until 2016 to get specs that other devices have right now since last year? Sony and Apple have so much in common. Well that's a year quicker than when 1440p will hit the iPhone.

That is why Apple is using Samsung to make a display, Sony should do the same. So you can get the best NOW, not 2 years from now when it cheaper and you pay the price is now.

This is what I don't understand about Sony and Apple users. They willing pay their cost and have lesser specs. Then when those 2 finally move up to standard stuff, that stuff is cheaper and they end up paying the same price for it 2 years later when the price has already dropped. Isn't that stupid?

You can buy several phones right now with 1440p starting at $599 for an S6. Next year Sony may have 1440p and its going to cost more. Then Apple will likely put it on the iPhone 7 and its going to cost more too. Sony has got to do better.

Your arguments are only about screen resolution, but the price of comparable Sony phones vs Apple phones are a lot...

The Z3 Compact can be bought right now for less than $400. The iPhone 6 (16GB) $690

And in my opinion the only thing missing on the Xperia devices that really matters for ME is the fingerprint scanner, but on the other hand it includes waterproofing, microSD slot, MHL 3.0 connection, secondary charging port (magnetic port), stereo front facing speakers, dedicated 2 stage camera shutter button, eyelet lanyard, standard USB host (mine included the cable).

1440p screens are not necessary even for 5.2" screens... why should they upgrade it if it comes at a cost on processing and battery?

I wouldn't expect a Jeep Wrangler to drastically change its iconic design... so if the design looks good, works ergonomically, and allows for useful features, then why change it completely?
I DO expect to change slightly here and there to forever improve it, but why trash it completely?

Additionally everybody knows what the iPhone looks like (in basic shape) and everyone knows what a Galaxy looks like.... they both have their iconic layout ingrained in people's head with their round and rectangle buttons... so it is not bad that Sony tries to keep a form factor that people recognize as a Sony Xperia...

You're comparing a $30,000 car to a $600 phone that it cost them $200 to make?

Cars in general keep a similar design and spec for maybe 5 years. But R&D on changing the design of a car is much higher.

I am sure car companies would change a cars design every year but they can't. Because changing the cars design also requires making the stuff you had fit. A drastic change in design, means the engine they already spent millions to make wont fit. The its a lose.

A phone is not the same. The SnapDragon 801 and 810 use the exact same die size, same for the GPU.

Look at the spec list man, the parts are nearly 100% identical. They changed 2 parts and that's it. 3 if you coujt they simply mirrored the front face.

The fact you compared the design change cost and requirements for a $30,000 truck vs a $200 phone is totally BS. Shame on you.

Unlike some guys here I am not picking on Sony. Apple does this BS too. The forst 3 iPhone were 100% identical. They used the same CPU and CPU and all they got were speed bumps. The iPhone 4 and 4S were 100% identical, The 5 and 5S and 5C were all identical devices just as both 6's are identical with the only difference being size and the 6S is goings be just like them.

With the Galaxy S series, The S models didn't charge the same hardware. Even tho the S4 and S5 shared the same resolution, they didn't use the exact same screen. Even though the Note 3 shared the same resolution as the S4, it wasn't the same screen just made bigger.

For what these thing cost on retail, they should be better especially when they come from brands who are suppose to be know as the top dogs. Sony and Apple are suppose to be the leaders. The reason they both always get beat is because they don't know how to keep a lead.

Wow you really worked hard to try and make your arguments valid. However you missed the point.

1. I am not comparing a car for the sake of it... I am comparing the Jeep Wrangler because it has have an iconic form that is internationally recognized and that is exactly what Apple did with the iPhone and what Samsung did with ALL of the Galaxies... and even if you do not want to face it, they all look very similar, they HAVE TO, it is more beneficial for them to have people look a phone and easily recognize it as a specific brand, than to see a phone and have no idea what it is and assume that it is "garbage"...
To be honest I DO WISH Sony took more risk with designs like the did with the Xperia SP, ZL, TX, etc and implemented in new models, but I believe they don't because they want people to look at their slabs and say "Thats an Xperia" it has happened to me, it is hard to find other people with Xperia devices, but the moment I see it I recognize it, just like regular people recognize an iPhone, a Galaxy or even a BB.
The reason Samsung is releasing a NORMAL S6 & a S6 Edge is not because of price, is because they need to make a transition to the new form that people instantly recognize. Otherwise the would have just release the Edge version and be done with it.

2. Regarding your post #29... FOR THE PRICE I PAID, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact offered the BEST features and specs that also fit my needs. You are admitting that you are not even too familiar with Xperia devices and still you go on arguing about it as if you knew...
Find me the links with the prices you posted because cheapest Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S6 (regular) starts at $680.
The cheapest iPhone 6 from Apple website is indeed $650
The Xperia Z3 from Sony website is $570
The Xperia Z3 Compact is $470

3. The Z4 has not been announced yet... the one you are talking about is a specific regional Japanese version. For all we know the international version will be better and different.

4. Regarding your post #32. The Xperia Z3 Compact is ABSOLUTELY not comparable with any other MINI offerings from Samsung, HTC or LG. The Z3C is indeed a flagship in a smaller form factor.

Differences between Z3 vs Z3C:
- 3GB RAM vs 2GB RAM
- 5.2" 1080p screen vs 4.6" 720p screen

THAT IS IT!. Everything else from the CPU, GPU, connectivity, Camera hardware, Camera features, is identical.

Differences between S5 vs S5 Mini:
- Many 3G / LTE bands vs fewer Bands
- 5.1" 1080p screen vs 4.5" 720p screen
- SnapDragon 801 vs Exynos 3
- 2GB RAM vs 1.5GB RAM
- 16MP Camera with phase detection vs 8MP camera with fewer features
- microUSB 3.0 with MHL and USB Host vs regular microUSB with no extra features.
- Barometer vs nothing
- Special Samsung movement and smart features vs less of that.

So don't tell me that the Z3 Compact is not a flagship, you are just ignorant about it.

I am just correcting you because you are making false statements in a Sony article.

the argument that everyone has about what specs are needed or not is just smoke an mirrors.

Let me be blunt, I'm not being mean. That is nothing more than a lame excuse. It's not about whether I need tit of not, what you should be saying is; for the price I am paying should I be getting it or not.

The iPhone 6 in the USA is $649 for 16GB vs example the Galaxy S6 that starts at $599. Now for $599 Samsung offers double the resolutions of the iPhone, double the storage, 2.5 times the camera resolution on the front, double on the back, a 20% larger display and as I said double the resolution, 4 times the dual quadcores vs dualcore, a better GPU, 3 times the RAM @ 80% faster speed and faster storage too - ALL FOR A LOWER STARTING PRICE

Yes SAmsung does make most of the stuff that goes into their phones, which in fact costs them more money because they not only design the part, they make it too. Unlike Sony and Apple who buy the parts. Buying the parts 3rd party and then paying someone ese to put them together is much cheaper than doing it yourself.

You are willing too offer excuses for OEM's, I'm not.

Now I'm not all that familir with the Xperia. But I do watch the device because I have considered it because it has unlocked boot loader I believe and its easy for me to use custom roms as something I do for fun.

Looks like the LTE model is $569, only $30 less than the S6. Which means it was at least 599 before the price drop. So, now we have the Z4 and according to the specs, the only thing they changed was 2 things. They changed the CPU from the SD801 to the 810 and they changed the GPU from the Adreno 330 to the 430. Everything else is 100% identical to the Z3 and they mirrored the from of the phone to be the reverse of the Z3.

The only other company guilty of doing such was Apple, but HTC did it too with the M9, which is just an M8 with the SD810.

SO what is the point of this phone and paying more when it offers nothing above the previous model. The last model had 1080p, why cant this one have 1440p? How does Sony expect to increase sales, selling the same frikkin phone the very next year?

I know what features it has, none of them are any big deal over the Z3, it was the same. You said the only thing missing. Well since the last model didn't have that, and many flagships do now, like the iPhone and the Galaxy S, shouldn't Sony be trying to match or beat them on some level?

Dude I said the same thing about Samsung when they didn't increase the resolution of the S5 over the S4. They listened not only to me but everyone because the Note 4 didn't have the same resolution as the Note 3.

I am not picking on the resolution, that is just the first thing I noticed about the specs.

I don't like or dislike Sony or Apple or any of them. I am not saying just because oone EM does something they all have to do it. However, if you are going to sell a "NEW" phone and it costs more, then it needs to actually be new.

cont'd - Not a lame cosmetic change and a speed bump. I got sick of that BS with Apple which is one of the top 5 reasons I stop buying their garbage. If Samsung does it, I will do the same, but their aren't.

The Sony Xperia costs as much or more than the Galaxy S. So if I am going to pay more potentially, I expect what I get to be equal or better than the competition. PERIOD.

Also, why would you compare the Compact? The Compact is smaller and thus its cheaper. Sure it s similarly spec'd vs the iPhone. But the compact isn't the top end model, the Z3 is; not the Compact.

The Compact Z3 is to the Xperia Z3 what the Galaxy S6 Mini would be to the S6. It is not the flagship model, it is a trim level lower.

I am equally comparing Sony's top phone, with Apple's top phone vs Samsung's top phone. Z4 vs iPhone 6 vs S6. Yes between the Z4 and the iPhone 6, yes the Z3 is better, but is better enough? No because for a lesser price I can get Samsung's flagship with better hardware for less.
Now to b fair, I realize these OEM's may work on a phone for a year. But I can bet it didn't take Sony a year to develop the Z4. They took all the unsold Z3's and basically popped the CPU and GPU off the PCB and drop on the newer chips and stuck it back into the same case and change the front very slightly.

Compare that to the iPhone 5S vs the iPhone 6. Compare that to the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy S6.

Sony is basically forcing themselves out the smartphone business. Samsung beats all the other Android OEM's because none of them are even trying to provide Samsung with any real competition. They ALL may as well fall off the face of the earth and just let Samsung have Android to themselves.

Look at this graphic -http://dazeinfo.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Global-smartphone-vendors-market-share-Q2-2014.png

Sony is so low on the pole, they don't even have their own slice of the pie. They are simply included in OTHER. But YOU think I just have an issue with the resolution. No, I just used that as a simple example.
When you are struggling from the bottom there are only 2 directions to go, up or out. Sony is nearly out. They already dropped out the PC business. Phones will be next.

Compact is a top end model. That's the thing with Sony, that's the only company that sells flagship in a compact form. It's not lower trim level because Z3C isn't trimmed down (unlike smaller versions of Samsung's or LG's flagships which are just expensive midrangers).

No, it didn't took them a year to develop Japanese Z4 because it's mostly updated Z3. International version will be slightly different, but we're talking about completely new generation which they're working on right now. They know what they're doing wrong (it took them some time to fugure it out), they changed their strategy but first effects are expected around Q4 2015. That's why they didn't put much of an effort into the Z4.

DIS in current Xperia devices is better an OIS on many other devices... I tested my Z3C against the Nexus 5... I will try to make a youtube video about it...

One could argue about image algorithms and quality and so on.... BUT SteadyShoot is one of the good software features found on Sony cameras, and it was well ported to their phones...
