The newly updated version of Microsoft's smartphone platform, Windows Mobile 6.5, is expected to be launched May 11th at the company's Tech Ed 2009 show in L.A. This information is reported on the Windows Mobile Team Blog and says that the announcement should take place during day one of the show between 1pm and 2:15pm at a session aimed at IT professionals and developers. Once the OS is released, it will be up to the handset manufacturers to load the software onto their devices before the public gets the chance to use it.

As we previously reported, the Windows Mobile platform is currently trails Symbian and RIM in mobile OS market share. In the same article, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that Windows Mobile 7 would be out in 2010.

We are going to see a lot of exciting new updates to windows mobile 6.5 and the anticipated version 7. Stuff like internet explorer mobile, live mesh for mobile. silverlight 2 for mobile, a new windows media player mobile and a new .NET compact framework should prove to be a big step forward. I think the key will be the launch and ultimate success or failure of the Windows Mobile Marketplace. Microsoft needs to get this right and I also think they need to really step up marketing efforts to entice developers to focus on creating new and innovative applications for the Windows Mobile platform. From what I have seen the new Diamond 2 is simply incredible. HTC has really done a fantastic job in the 2nd version of this device because they listen to their customers. Windows Mobile is a very powerful and reliable operating system and has a long history of growth, innovation and stability. Google Android, the new Palm Web OS have a long way to go in my eyes. With the Diamond 2 having Windows Mobile 6.5 on the new hardware the features like live mesh for mobile, silverlight 2 for mobile and windows media player mobile should be a huge step forward for us. I hope the carriers are responsive and allow us to upgrade to 6.5 very quickly. This is an area where Microsoft and the carriers are going to have to improve if they ever hope for broader distribution and long-term brand loyalty. When can we get them in the US?!
