This is reportedly the real Xiaomi Mi 5; picture shows thin bezels and home button
Yesterday, we showed you a render of the Xiaomi Mi 5, which looked like it might have been a photoshopped image of the Xiaomi Mi Note. Now, a few hours later, a post on Weibo (which was subsequently removed) reveals what is supposed to be a real photograph of Xiaomi's new flagship model. We see thin bezels, and the home button that will reportedly contain the fingerprint scanner.

Speaking of the fingerprint reader, a patent application for such a sensor has been leaked. The only thing we notice about it is that it seems to be embedded in the display, which means that it is an ultrasonic scanner, similar to Qualcomm's version. Note the lack of a home button on the drawing of the phone. This might be for a future model though, because the last word we heard is that there is no ultrasonic fingerprint scanner on the Mi 5, which explains the home button's appearance on the photos.

There are also some images from the design patent for the Xiaomi Mi 5. All of that good stuff, including the pictures of the phone, can be found in the slideshow below.

Thanks for the tip!

I agree. Completely unimpressed with the design. Looks like a cheap budget phone. And reportedly they want to price this higher to improve their image as premium product ? THAT design does not look premium at all to me. "Made in China" design is what it is. If they charge this $450+, I'll skip. S6 still looks a lot better.

Disgusting looking phone. They took a few step backward in the design department.

The steam and hype is over. It looks like deja-vu somewhere, sometimes.

I'm the kind of man who don't care much (if at all) about design and looks... I care about the user experience, functionality, smoothness, speed and simplicity... But go ahead, 'lick the look' for all I care! You guys sure buy a Smartphone to flash it to girls, eh? Well, this is kinda low... And the chick won't be impressed unless she happens to be a computer geek, which is a rarity now a days... HA! G'Day

Well I prefer an overall package with great design along with great user experience. If I'm in to buy something with my hard earned money then I want it to look what I pay for, I don't want it to look like some cheap product that sells on roadside. That comparison with smartphone and girls are kinda doesn't make sense. But this leaks looks not bad at all.

@LetsBeHonest Totally agree! Yes, looks does matter. But judging a product solely by it's look is just foolish IMHO. Specs aren't even out for this phone and yet people are already labeling it as 'DISGUSTING'! That clearly indicates that these people buy smartphones to flash it around...! Which is just silly, now isn't it?

Of course judgments based on appearance is absolutely stupid in my opinion too.. But think from different point of view. It is leaked render reveals what the possible design will look like. This article solely based on the "design" factor of the upcoming mi5 so people might have different opinion on the leaked render cuz "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" they say:).

Design is user experience Any product design 101 course will tell you that.

Appearances matter. Since one of the things I'm going to be doing whilst using a phone as a daily driver is look at it, I want to enjoy the aesthetics. I want to like the way it feels, and i want it to be pleasing to the eye. It's not to impress girls (that would really tick off my wife), it's to impress me. It's the same thing as other things I own. All my car really does is take me from point A to point B, but I also want it to look good. All I really use my house for is shelter, but I want it to be pleasing to look at. If a manufacturer is going to get my money, it should try and produce the best package it can. That includes speed, elegance, ergonomics, user experience and quality. How the device looks absolutely plays into that.

I think your analogy of your house is unrelated to smartphone. Smartphones do much more than calls and SMS as compared to a house which does nothing else apart from shelter.
