The first live pictures of the canceled BlackBerry Ontario leaked out

We rarely have the chance to peek behind the curtains and have a look at some of the prototypes that handset makers are testing before unleashing new products on the market. BlackBerry isn't making phones any longer, but three years ago the Canadian company tried a comeback in the smartphone market.

One of the devices that should've heralded BlackBerry's return was codenamed “Ontario.” The first information about the smartphone leaked about three years ago, around the same time we heard about the BlackBerry Passport.

BlackBerry Ontario was supposed to pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB RAM and the brand new BlackBerry 10.3 OS on board. The Ontario would have been BlackBerry's new flagship replacing the Z30 back in 2014.

Unfortunately, the Ontario had never seen the light of day, while the BlackBerry Passport made it to market in fall 2014. A couple of pictures of the canceled BlackBerry Ontario reveal an all-touch smartphone, unlike the Passport which comes with full QWERTY keyboard.

It's unclear why BlackBerry decided to ditch the Ontario in favor of the QWERTY-based Passport, but the latter hasn't debuted to raving reviews at all.

Must be desperate for something to write about if all you've got to talk about is cancelled phones!!

I doubt this would have done much of anything to revive BB. But, it at least has some appeal to it, unlike that butt ugly and stupid Passport. Anyway, at least BB tried to bring something different to market. If the Android phone they sold with slider board came with a stylus like the Note, then I would be a BB owner. I was very impressed with a lot about that device.

Too bad they couldn't have released both the Ontario and the Passport. It would've been interesting to see which sold more units. The Passport with it's fantastic innovative new keyboard or the more mainstream all touch display on the Ontario...

Totally agree. I would have loved to see which one sold more.

It wouldn't have sold well. Don't you know? It's not universally unlocked.

Who said anything about super hero avatars? Please stop deflecting.

You tell me. You're the one assuming.

Why should I tell you about something that you brought up? And there is no "assuming" necessary. You're too obvious. That's why others have noticed who you really are. You're not fooling anyone here.

Obviously you have an obsession. You should just confess and let it go.

Lol, it's hilarious that you keep trying to deflect from the fact that you're mxyzptlk with multiple account disorder. I insist that you seek treatment for that immediately.

No, hilarious is you picking this fight just because you're a little man possessed with an obsession. You should get help.

Lol, nerve touched, deep in your gut, mxyzptlk. Now stop being so dramatic and go seek help for your multiple account disorder.

Obviously you're the one who has the touched nerves. May I remind you that you are the one who started this. You should be the one seeking help.

Dam! Got called out already huh? Such a lame attempt Michelle. We all know it's you. I would say the jig is up but it never got off the ground to begin with.

I would have bought the upgrade to the z30, but by then the writing was on the wall for the BB10 OS unfortunately. It will go down as the best mobile OS in history imo - but the "app gap" made BlackBerry readjust and go with the Android platform. We shall see how well the TCL/BlackBerry KeyOne does. I suspect it will be the best seller since the BlackBerry heydays.

Agree with you, John. BB10 is the best mobile OS. IMO as well.

11. Tony_Stark unregistered

Best is entirely subjective. It depends on what you mean by best.
