Sony schedules a "Demand Great" event for October 9, Xperia Z3-related announcements expected

Sony today sent out invites to a press event that’s going to take place on October 9 in New York City. While the company didn’t say exactly what it would announce on that day, the image put together by Sony (see it on the left - click to enlarge) reads that we’re “invited to demand great.”

Ever since it officially unveiled the Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact, Sony’s been promoting them with the hashtag #DemandGreat. So it’s pretty obvious that we should expect to see an announcement related to one of the new Xperias. Or two, or all three of them.

We already know that the Xperia Z3 is headed to T-Mobile USA. We also know that the Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact will be available to buy, unlocked, via Sony US Store. So perhaps the upcoming announcement will bring us news on specific availability - maybe via more US carriers? We’ll just have to wait and see. Meanwhile, to learn more about Sony’s latest Android devices, you should check out our Xperia Z3 review, Xperia Z3 Compact review, and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact hands-on.

Sony never offers good factory calibration on most of their TVs out of the box. Sharp/LG/Samsung are where it's at

Sony offers the best good factory calibration on most of their TVs out of the box. Top standards.

From the picture, it seems to be a tablet and a phablet. Could be a 12 inch tablet and the Z3 Ultra !!!!

It's a glorified Z2, minus the amped up brightness.

Well, the Galaxy S5 is a glorified of Galaxy S4.

Um, no. Just no. S4 -> S5: - Much better processor - Better battery life optimizations - Improved design materials - Bigger battery capacity - Brighter, more energy efficient, more color accurate screen - Far superior camera that improves on detail/color/low-light - Water/dust resistance - Overhauled UI - I'll even include the heart rate monitor for the sake of changes/additions Z2->Z3 - Same outdated processor - Largely the same design ethos (which was negative in and of itself outside of subjective opinion) - Same screen technology (just brighter) - Same water resistance - Same terrible UI - A regression in battery life capacity - Same exact camera module with some firmware changes only While the Z3 might have a slightly better IP rating for water repelling, we're talking about the improvements and changes that these flagships made from their respective predecessors. And the Z3 definitely flat-lines. I can't stand Apple and their garbage iPhone products, but I can't tell which is worse, them or Sony. That debate is up in the air.

Um, no? Just no? Gosh. Delusional much? Most of the list items you wrote on S4 -> S5 are actually true to Z2 -> Z3 as well. Z2 -> Z3 - Better battery life optimizations (2-days battery life now. NOT just on standby) - Improved design materials (The frame/edges are a lot better now) - Brighter, more energy efficient, more color accurate screen (It's not just the 'Same screen technology') - Superior camera that improves on detail/color/low-light (Same camera module? lol. It's actually wider angle lens with higher ISO available) - Water/dust resistance (Better IP) - UI improvements too: Look for that 3+3+3 blog post if you don't believe me. Sony's UI isn't terrible. It's clean and classy. So really, S4 -> S5 looks like the more underwhelming one if you really use your brain.

Even a 4 year can tell which one is a bigger upgrade...

Such Samsung fanboy comment...You failed to realize that the MUCH BETTER processor is the same one that you can find in the S5. Upgrade might be minimal, but still on par with today's standard. Honesty, PA rates Z3's battery as the 2nd best in 2014 flagships, (with Z3 Compact being the 1st). I don't know how you can argue with them, besides calling PA a cheat. Design material... didn't most of everyone don't like the plastic and complain about it almost everyday? That was just bad and Samsung FINALLY saw the change. (Of course that was big...) Camera department...FAR better? Is it comparable to DSLR? If not, then it's not that far then. Water/dust resistance - good for Samsung, finally follow suits. Did you realize that Sony already had it on the first Xperia? UI is such a personal choice, so I got nothing to say on that. All those heart rate monitor/apps crap from all companies are not that accurate/useful. I got nothing to say on that. Yes, Z3 didn't have much to upgrade, but that's because it was already an outstanding device on its own. They chose to have 6 months upgrade cycle, and of course the list of upgrade would be shorter. Imagine the upgrade cycle extend from 6 months to 1 year, then the list is probably as long as the Samsung. If Sony can pull a long list of upgrade in just every 6 months, then Samsung will probably do the same and would be scare a bit... I don't know what kind of debate are you thinking about. I mean they only difference is how each company approach to the public. The Sony Z3 is still a flagship device. It would not lose the battle when it comes to running a comparison against the S5 or any other flagships out there.

You got to understand that sony is implementing a 6 month cycle upgrade compared to samsung's 1 year cycle upgrade right? Having said that, z3 is still a disappointing upgrade from z2 and my money is in the compact.

Dafuq? Are you kidding me? Snapdragon 600 to a 801 isn't a big upgrade? Much better design and build quality, much more improved display, better battery life, new camera sensor tech with improved image quality. That's the biggest leap from a predecessor in 2014.

The only thing I would like to see from Sony regarding their smartphones, it's an overhaul of their UI. The fact that it's quite close to stock Android is great, but it's really outdated aesthetically speaking. The interface looks boring, a more modern look would be the last piece to an already great offer from Sony.

Stock Android, while superior to iOS, is just bland, boring, and downright has less features than a skinned version of the same OS. But we can agree to disagree here on the Android front. Because its OS allows for it to be anything we personally want from it. Be it a particular skin or the stock theme.
