Report: Next Huawei flagship will feature an iPhone X-like notch

The weird notch that's probably the defining trait of the iPhone X seems like a love or hate affair, as you can either like it or find it annoying. In any case, let's agree that it's a controversial feature that might or might not make it in future iPhones.

Just like many times in the past, Apple and Android smartphones market are borrowing design features or technologies from each other. Obviously, that's not bad at all since we all want the best of the best when we buy a new flagship.

Well, it looks like Huawei wants to take that controversial notch design feature, which is also part of the Android-powered Essential Phone, and put it on one of its upcoming flagships, possibly the P11. XDA-Developers reports they have found evidence in official Huawei firmware files in the form of an overlay image that's referenced in a configuration file that defines the “RoundCornerDisplay.”

Moreover, a configuration file is more specific and refers to one of the system build properties as a “notch.” The image attached to the article has been recreated from the overlay image found in the firmware files.

Another detail that seems to confirm the information is the resolution of the Huawei P11's display. According to the report, the phone has a 6.01-inch display with 2160 x 1080 pixels resolution, but the boot animation suggests that the phone uses a 2244 x 1080 resolution. This particular discrepancy in resolution points to a change in design, namely the notch.

Remember essential did the notch thing before Apple. It's okay to do a notch, I guess, but if you copy the removal of the finger print scanner, then good luck with trying to strum up sales.

Lolno. Essential phone said they wanted a phone that lasts, which means 2 year cycle.

You do not understand the simple "a phone that lasts" expression. Releasing another phone does not make the previous one last less. And not releasing the next one very soon means going out of business.

I thought I’d read somewhere that they were doing a 2 year cycle. Maybe I was wrong. Regardless, it’s only recently been released anyway.

When they said a phone that lasts, they probably meant physically. Whatever they meant, I highly doubt they won't release another device for two years, especially considering how disasterous the Essential phone was at launch. They'd fade even lower into irrelevancy than they are now. They're probably prepping the Essential PH-2 as we speak.

Right.. Their phone may lasts, but their sales wont. Their sales isnt even great to begin with, just see how much they drop the price in just a few months after launch. They need to refresh their flagship ASAP to stay in business

I think the price drop has to do moreso with the fact that the device itself is an absolute trainwreck....but I agree, a refresh is desperately needed.

I believe another device that is not doing so well is the iPhone X. Maybe I should say not doing as expected. Especially when we are seeing sales like buy an iPhone X and get a $250 gift card. That phone is only a month old. Plus at the beginning they said shipments are delayed until the new year. Yet you can now walk into any Apple store and pick one up. No wonder why they released a 4th generation iPhone 6 (8).

What do you expect from a Chinese TV company that shamelessly copied the NBC peacock logo?

What's hilarious is that you don't see apple suing the crap out of these chinese companies despite the fact that some of their phones look exactly the same as their devices but they sue the crap out of samsung for looking similar.

Brutal and lazy design element. Go back to the drawing board.

Let me guess, screen repair will be more costly. I bet if any site made a poll whether you want to choose between having a bezzless phone with a notch or a phone with bezless without notch, then most will chose to have bezels over notch.
