Poll results: Which chat app do you use most?
In the past 9 years, phones have slowly transformed from devices for vocal communication to devices for text communication. On paper, this may look like a devolution, a step back, but in reality, a plethora of apps and services have made texting just that much more convenient. Most of the time, the sender knows when their message has been received and / or read, and the recipient can read and reply at their own convenience. Not to mention, it's all free as it's done over the Internet, which we are already paying for anyway. And sharing media, such as photos, videos, sound files, et cetera is much easier. Calls aren't extinct, no. But they are more of an “urgent” or “serious” channel of communication.

Two years ago, we asked you the question — which chat app are you using? Well, the landscape has changed a bit in the past months, and we felt it appropriate to ask once again — which app do you favor now, in 2016? And wow... is WhatsApp popular or what? Here are the results!

Which chat app do you use most?

Facebook Messenger
Google Allo
Google Hangouts
BlackBerry Messenger
I use a few equally often

Voice and video chatting, file, video and photo sharing. Very light, doesn't hog battery or resources, cross platform and simple to use. Plus everyone uses it including iPhone owners.

Update your WhatsApp. Unless you've been living in a cave somewhere it came out about two weeks ago.

So iMessage isn't the most popular chat app? I'm shocked. NOT!

No, not a shocker considering most (if not all) people here use Androids and are Fandroids... iMessage is; without a doubt; the SECOND most popular Instant Messaging 'app'... The only difference is that the people who use it are average users, and not geeks...! Conduct this poll on social media such as Twitter etc, and I'm sure the 'turn-out' would be FAR greater than this... G'Day!

I don't know abt other countries but if this poll is conducted only in india then results would have been whatsapp 90%+

I'm pretty sure globally Facebook Messager would still beat iMessage. 90% of the world uses Android and all.... Nice assumption though.

At least you concede that whatsapp is by far the most popular. But FB messenger is definitely number 2 by a long distance from iMessage or any other app. I'm amazed that people use an intrusive, resource hogging, battery killer like FB messenger. At least most of my friends do. Geeks or not iMessage and most Apple apps just aren't that popular and even if they were free and cross platform it's too late.

How would you make iMessaging the second most popular chat software when its mathematically improbable?

So I guess all 1.4B Andrpidnjsers must come here? The reason iMessage isn't on top, is because it isn't cross-platform. And even if Apple brings it to Android, it won't have the same features. Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp, are I identical on all platforms. They have more features and are just better. IMessage is good, so is BBM. But they are only good on their own platforms. I do mind proprietary things, but I prefer having options. Especially since i Use Windows, Android, iOS and OSX daily. IMessage only works on 2 of those. That automatically makes it useless garbage.

There are very few iOS users on PA. Most are android - so not one android user can it's for iMessage and even though iOS users ALL have iMessage some use other messeging apps more frequently because their friends that don't have iPhones use something else.

Or maybe because iMessage sucks vs other options. Even if iMessage comes to Andrpid, most people aren t going to stop using what works better or what they're use to using. You Apple fans always try to make it seem it's our problems that Apple doesn't support cross-platform because it's a waybto keep you sucks under their thump. When younhave lots of friends. You have to use what's best to keep in touch. The vast majority of the world uses Windows and Android. Get over it, it's probably never going to change. Fact - if Apple had never brought iTunes to Windows, the iPhone would never have been a topic for conversation. Because the vast majority of people would certain not buy a Mac just to own an iPhone. You all claim that their aren t many Apple users on PA is BS. They just don't argue or troll like you all do. They read and move on. I frequents several tech sites where I have an account and never post. Because reading is more fun and helps you gain knowledge. PA is a site for people like you, who are allowed to speak ill or stretch the truth to fit your agenda and theirs. Item is Android uses who keep sites like PA online. Because the day we stop coming is the day PA dies.

Ok. Let's concede that iMessage is the best chat app of all time for a moment. 90% of smartphone users are on Android and I'm pretty sure the majority of them didn't vote in this poll. If 90% of users are on Android then my simple fandroid brain will concede the remaining 10% to iPhone users. I think it's pretty clear that the remaining 10% are more likely to use the chat app that everyone else is using rather than the other way round. Whatsapp and Facebook have over 1 billion users each and that includes iPhone users. So how on God's green earth can an exclusive iPhone app even come close to competing with those numbers? Just take their popularity as fact and stop spewing garbage.

How is what you said different from what I said?

You were implying that if more IOS users were on here they would have made a difference. That's false and you're grasping for some kind of spin in favor of iMessage.

I can't believe that I live in a country where Viber has 10 times more users than Whatsapp (conservative guess). Why is anyone using that bloated mess is beyond me. That being said, I may have to look for WA alternatives if FB keeps messing with it's policies.

Many iphone users in my country doesn't even know what does iMessage actually do. They just install Whatsapp ASAP on new devices. Majority of them believe iMessage is just the default (and only for) SMS app.

I'm a heavy whatsapp user and I like it. But the most feature rich and second most heavily used messenger app on my phone is Hangouts. Free Google Voice number that roams worldwide for free. File sharing, sms, voice and video conferencing. It's really a superb app that Google has bungled in marketing terms.

I think WeChat (WeiXin) would have won had it been added to the list........ and had phonearena been a popular site in China. Everyone over here uses it, from toddlers to grandparents :D
