Pebble Time watch smartstraps bring expandable sensors and a myriad of new possibilities

The Pebble Time Steel was not the only new anonuncement for Pebble today, as the company also unveiled details about its fully customizable smartstraps with an open SDK and possibility to add various sensors. With watches having minimal space for sensors, it makes sense to put them onto the strap, as straps could

How does the Pebble make this connection between the timepiece itself and its bands? There is a dedicated connection that allows sending and receiving both power and data to the device. Naturally, replacing these smartbands would happen in the same way as for the normal bands.

The first few suggested sensors that could arrive in these new smartbands could bring the following new features to the new Pebble Time series:

  • GPS
  • heart-rate monitor
  • NFC
  • additional battery

The list is, naturally, open for developers who can make bands and program them via the open SDK. The smartstraps could also be used to provide additional space for notifications.

That's a nice feature. However that feature will make the Pebble Time not waterproof anymore. Considering if the pins get wet. If more watch bands arrive with more features and functionality, then that could out way the negative of this feature.
