Raising more than $978,000 for New York City in a 24 hour stretch, New York's finest managed to ticket 7,529 drivers for using a cellphone while in the midst of operating a vehicle. The ticket carries a $130 fine. This is the third day this year that the NYPD have used a one day crackdown to publicize the dangers of driving while talking on a mobile handset. The other two times were in May and August. On an average day in 2008, N.Y. cops gave out 536 tickets for the same offense. No info was revealed on how many of the 7,529 ticketed last Thursday were taxi drivers.
