Ever since the first DotA got launched as a Warcraft III map, multiplayer online battle arena games (also known as MOBAs) have experienced an ever-growing popularity – just behold how many monthly active users both Dota 2 and League of Legends currently have. This variation of the tower defense genre splits players into two teams of heroes that battle between themselves and try to destroy the main building in the opposing team's base. Although they are fairly popular on PC, there are only a few mobile MOBA games, mostly due to their tricky mechanics.

Enter Dethroned, one of the latest representatives of the game genre to grace our Android devices. The game is still in beta, but it's completely playable. Dethroned is, in fact, more of a mix between a regular MOBA and a tower defense game. Yes, players are still divided in two teams that have to wage war on each other, but they need to build the defensive towers on their own, too – in regular MOBAs, these buildings are already built when the game commences.

Although it might sound frustrating to some, it's a curious innovation to the mechanics of the MOBA genre. But apart from manually building towers, players will have to send waves of minions towards the enemy's base by themselves, too. This, combined with the fact that we are speaking about a mobile game, could be the deal-breaker for some MOBA fans.

Players will be able to choose from 8 heroes, each of which has 3 or 4 unique abilities. Just like in any self-respecting MOBA game out there, each hero in Dethroned can be equipped with several items, which enhance its perks and abilities. The developer makes it clear that the final version of Dethroned will come with even more heroes and items.

Dethroned is a full-fledged MOBA game that has a lot of potential and although it's still in beta and needs a lot of polishing, fans of the genre should definitely check it out. There is no word whether it would be available for iOS devices, however. It is free to play, but comes with some in-app purchases and obtrusive ads. Don't hesitate to try it out, though!
