Apple's outsourcing mentioned in presidential debate
"iPad, the Macs the iPhones, they're all manufactured in China. One of the major reasons is labor is so much cheaper here (sic). How do you convince a great American company to bring that manufacturing back here?"-Candy Crowley, moderator
With the launch of the Apple iPhone 5 behind us, and the apparent introduction of the Apple iPad mini less than a week away, Apple made some other news when the company's outsourcing was interjected into the presidential debate on Tuesday night. Calling Apple a "great American company," Moderator Candy Crowley asked both candidates how they would try to convince a firm like Apple to return all of the manufacturing jobs to the U.S. that left for lower wage workers in countries like China.

Romney was the first to answer and said that America was not to blame and that the fault should be placed squarely on the shoulders of China. The Republican candidate said that China has been cheating by devaluing its currency, (a move that tends to increase exports and lower imports) hacking computers and stealing IP. As an example, he mentioned the counterfeit Apple Stores found last year in China. Back home, the Governor said that America should be made more attractive for entrepreneurs and those who want to expand business.

The president said that some jobs have left the country for good, but these are the low-skill, low-pay jobs that the country doesn't want. Obama said that he would like the U.S.to attract more high skill, high paying jobs. He added that the U.S.must invest in advanced manufacturing for stability to return to the country. Obama added that cutting investments in research and science will lead to the next innovation being discovered by some other country which will host "the next Apple."

Why should anyone help Apple make more and more profits?!? Maybe it's time Apple gave back something instead of 1% to the poor. Cause the rich is getting richer, and the poor, poorer. Atleast Bill Gates suggested a vaccine to depopulate the poor. Eat the Rich...

Correction. Apple will just charge more for the phone. This will keep their profit margin high and people will buy it anyway. It's the sad truth.

While I agree that America does need more high-paying jobs, we also need more low-paying ones. Unemployment has been hovering dangerously close to 10%, which means about 3 MILLION people not working, and without those workers, the economy suffers, those folks have to rely on government support which drains resources from other government programs, and everyone except the profiteers in the corporations that have outsourced their labor (and the laborers themselves, in terms of work versus no work) suffers.

It's 7.8 %...lowest in three years. If you watched the debate Obama plain and simply said those jobs are not coming back and added they are low skill jobs that we couldn't take back from the low wage Chinese workers. This is just something we'll have to count our losses with and work on being better skilled at what's currently offered with the businesses we have.

that 7.8% unemployment rate is misleading as it does not count those people who gave up hope of finding a job after a few years as well as those who no longer qualify for unemployment benefits....the figure is closer to 14%.

I honestly believe the whole "gave up looking" is a load of crap. I don't know who has it like that that they could decide they would no longer look for work anymore. Either these people just became new panhandlers or they are well off and decided they'd just sit back and relax. No one unemployed with a family or other responsibilities and priorities can just say, "Oh, I'll never find a job...oh well I'll stop looking".

Low paying jobs is what causes people to live poorly, they are unemployed because those low paying jobs are not enough to sustain a basic lifestyle. Unemployment has gone down to 7.8%, the reason is because high paying jobs have gone up, meaning people have gone up in the ranks leaving their old lower paying jobs for the previously unemployed.

"China has been cheating" is kinda offensive. Apple must have had their reasons for making their devices in china instead of u.s

I think it's offensive too. Especially to the workers who have no say in their wages or work conditions.

Why blame China?? It's their lost valuing their currency lower than USA.
If China produce ipad for US$ 50 labor cost, and only got US$ 10, I think Apple is the one that got the profit, not China, not their labor. In fact, their labor will got only a little money that they could not experience their live with American standard. So, I think America should thanking China for being a fool if they really lowering their currency value.

and I think we all over the world really need to thank China for providing us a slave that willing to work cheap. Yes, I call them SLAVE.

Its not china fault apple is ripping them. If they wanna work for dirt cheap they can, better than starving, even though apple is still taking advantage of them.
There will always be cheap labor somewhere. Look at home depot

LOL... really wanna know why? because the labor is really cheap... they sold their device with a very high price tag!

while if you want to a "made in USA" device, the labor is very expensive and the device will be sold very expensive too... thats the reason why nexus Q is expensive! coz its made in USA

Open up a factory and pay minimum wage. People will come. They will always work for money. Pay $5 an hour and people will work. Why because they're making nothing and $5 > 0. People are way too concerned about what's fair to workers when they should be concerned with what it would take to keep jobs in this country. Yes, even low paying ones, because in the end people are working and making money. Would you rather have 10 million unemployed or 9 million working a low wage job that they can choose to leave it stay at?
