Apple has pre-emptively loaded up its LTE patent defense gun against Samsung

Apple has pre-emptively loaded up its LTE patent defense gun against Samsung
Last week, Apple won a huge victory in court against Samsung as a jury of 9 people decided that the Koreans have infringed on Apple’s patents and should pay over $1 billion in damages. Samsung was definitely not happy with the decision. Not surprisingly, soon after, we heard that the Korean company has pointed its LTE patent gun against Apple and is just waiting for an upcoming iPhone with LTE to start firing in court.

Samsung has got the strongest LTE patent portfolio in the industry, holding a whopping 819 patents, nearly 13% of all the patents filed, and a lot of those were developed by Samsung itself.

Apple on the other hand has also pre-emptively loaded the patent guns in defense mode - Cupertino has a meager 44 LTE patents developed on its own, but it has been actively purchasing patents and with all of its acquired IP, Apple’s LTE patent portfolio now amounts to 434 patents. U.S. patent firm InterDigital is the second-biggest player in LTE with 780 patents.

Interestingly, Apple held no LTE patents registered with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute last year. With its newly acquired LTE patent portfolio, Apple is now among the 10 biggest LTE patent holders.

The real patent battle however will not happen in standard technological patents, but in commercial LTE intellectual property and we’re yet to see how Samsung and Apple are doing there.

Payback against apple who has almost $700 billion in cash. There is no payback. Plus my assumption is Apple has alot of backing. Not much is gonna happen to them. Just too many uneducated fools donating money to them.

$700 billion in cash? What fantasy land are you living in? Apple has slightly over $100 billion in cash.

Last I read was $600+billion unless someone is lying to time or they're worth that much. No matter, Apple's got cash to burn.

Apple's market value is $600+ billion, closing in on $700 billion. Likely where the confusion arose from.

my youtube video based on Steve Job's infamous quote 11 months ago, Apple only had 40 billion to squander going thermonuclear against Android

buying patents for surviving. innovation at its best.

Apple is buying patents so they dont lose, because samsung already stated that it would sue apple right away if they came out with an LTE device. Not trying to innovate here, just trying to defend.

Apple will still lose, you can't buy a patent that was already in existence from a different company. Unless they have an entirely unique way of creating LTE radio and I seriously doubt they do, there patents are about as good as a water bucket full of holes.

Cowards always do the back-door fighting. Never face-to-face and with uniqueness. Another East India Colonialism Company from Silicon valley. Grabbing others properties and claiming "its my fore-fathers' innovations". Winning in Homeland court is easy and US is politically corrupted, everybody knows that. Now the Coward Sh**t busy preparing for LTE defense.

True Warren Anderson is a saint and Julian Assagne is a criminal ... that's what a corrupt system's preachings on "justice" is all about.

You mean like when Google bought Motorola strickly for its patents?

Google bought it to defend themselves from Apple. Apple buys patent to defend themselves against a stone they threw first. They deserve to lose this this lawsuit and the iPhone deserves to be banned, for all the trouble Apple caused in the mobile world.

Keep telling yourself that. If its just for defense why did Moto just launch a new lawsuit against Apple? They could have just waited and if Apple sued them again they could just present their patents and thats it. But they didn't, they went on offense are trying to get obsolete Apple products banned. You're right thats totally defensive. Both companies are all about money and that means dominating a multi-billion dollar marketplace that also happens to be the future of computing. Quit acting like Google is so innocent and holy.

Apple declared "thermonuclear" and strike against google's major android partners, a fact that you conveniently fail to mention. Apple also did a 'First Strike' on Samsung and follow up with two nukes on Samsung Flagship "GIII" and Note You are right! There are no innocent parties here just that we detest apple more. Deal with it!

Tit for tat. Who started the "Patent-Patent" freeking game. If you throw a stone at first with an intention to harasse someone, save your "BIG-GIANT-DIRTY-A*S" from being busted. Smartphone/Telecomm. technology is no more fully-control under US, remember that. The Asians are rising at a speed you have no idea if you are fully ignorant about Asian Rising Market.

At least Apple is up front about their business. They felt they were being ripped off so they did something about it. Google just sits back, steals all your information and tries to quietly run everyone else out of business. Thats why they're facing huge anti-trust lawsuits in Europe. "Unbeknownst to its shareholders, Google's increasingly anti-competitive practices have been quietly accruing billions of dollars of antitrust liabilities," Raff said. So just keep drinking the Android/Google "don't be evil" kool-aid.

so.. apple was up front when they got caught tracking every movement and logging everything you did on your cellphone for a year at a time? really? Were they up front with that well known browser bug that they left open for 2 years before they decided to try to sue google (who was among hundreds of people exploiting it) for exploiting it to add a +1 button to their page? Were they up front with people in Italy when they tried to get them to pay for a 2 year warranty when it was legally required to be given for free? Apple isnt up front about anything. Talk bout drinking the kool-aid.

At least Google provide an option to disable data collection.. Apple just play innocent, and pretend that only google is collecting data. News Flash!!! Everyone is doing it, some are more up front than others and provide option for you to disable data collection. I have yet to see such option in any apple devices, as its not a law to have it yet.

Buying Motorola is particularly another strategy. Google rarely play the dirty game "Patents Patents my freeking Patents". Google sponsors and patronize open source platform. To protect Open Source Platform Rising Star Android and its Allies, Google, Of Course, has got the 100% rights to defend its long-worked Linux OS. Your logic is not that much stronger. Apple's claim "Slide-to-Unlock", "Round-shape-Look","Similar Icons Rows" are silly matters. It's Apple's own playground- US Court-yard.Come to another countries. Apple's Patented "DUMB-A*S" will be busted. You will see soon. How much have you really paid for an Android OS ?

When you cant create you buy. Samsung holds the most important patents with LTE phones.. (and of course supplies the evil fruit company with parts anyways). I thik they hsould attack on 2 fronts. The source of iphone components and LTE.
