The Apple iPhone 5 supports 4G LTE service
With the
Apple iPhone 5 the first of Apple's iconic smartphones to support LTE, the carriers have been on a
mission to expand their LTE coverage to as many heavily populated, or oft-traveled locations, before the phone's launch on Friday. By doing this, Verizon, AT&T and Sprint are adding to the number of possible buyers for the latest iteration of the iPhone. Just the other day, the nation's second largest carrier added Wilmington, Delaware and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to its LTE footprint. Today, AT&T has
turned the switch to on in 8 more locations while expanding coverage in another.
AT&T's 4G LTE service is now available in the Detroit metro area, Portland, Seattle, Honolulu, Pittsburgh, Sacramento, Birmingham and Memphis. In addition, LTE coverage has been expanded tin Miami-Dade County. LTE service offers 4G data speeds
as much as ten times faster than 3G. That, of course, is just a guideline and actual speeds can be higher or lower. For example, on Tuesday some LTE users in Detroit were able to download data at speeds of around 54Mbps.
