Windows 10 is "very smooth" on the Nokia Lumia 635

Windows 10 is
Microsoft recently confirmed that it's working to bring Windows 10 (or at least some of its features) to low-end Lumia smartphones. For now, it looks like things are going well in this regard.

Today, Microsoft's Garbiel Aul, who's leading the Windows 10 Insider program, said that he's currently testing Windows 10 a Nokia Lumia 635, and the OS is "very smooth on it overall." As you may know, the Lumia 635 features 512 MB of RAM and a Snapdragon 400 processor, so it's one of the least powerful Windows Phone 8 devices out there. If Windows 10 runs smoothly on the 635, it will most probably also play well with handsets like the Lumia 530, Lumia 525, or even the Lumia 520.

A Windows 10 preview for phones should be launched pretty soon, and handsets with 512 MB of RAM will get it, too.

As for the final and stable version of Windows 10, this is expected to be available starting this summer. That's not exactly soon, but it's probably worth the wait.

Absolutely. I hope it works smooth on Lumia 520 despite the fact that it only have a dual core CPU. I know MS will try their best because its their most popular Lumia.

The 635 has a quad core 1.2 Ghz CPU, where as the 520 has a dual core 1 Ghz CPU.

Let's hope. I am using a Lumia 1020, so I'm not too worried, but an accessible OS unified among devices is always a bonus.

its actually a tech preview not dev preview. dev preview means its almost good for a full release. this tech preview is def going to have bugs way more than the dev preview

Only rename wp10 to windows 10 on mobile to cheat people. My pc have xeon cpu and 16GB ram but install prereview windows 10, run very slow and have many bug than windows 8.1.

Who cares if your PC have xeon cpu and 16GB of RAM.

It's kind of a given preview software would have bugs (regardless if you have 10 xeons or a billion gb of ram). If this is a surprise to you or you can't deal with it, previews aren't for you.

You are kidding right? I would say duuuhhhhh You have a preview version it says clearly in the statement that its a preview version and it contains bugs! Using it is your own risk so stop moaning kid!

People buy Lumia 635 as a 'wearable' of the window 10 pc. Hardly a daily driver

seems like only Google has failed to follow through with an OS that fits and operates correctly on a tiny bit of RAM.

Hopefully lollipop will fix this

Was that not the whole point of KitKat?

Well google does have an OS that is capable of perform smooth on even 512MB ram that is Android 4.4 Kit Kat . But OEMs ruin it with their bloated it with their heavy skin. So I won't blame google.

Blame the Oems. The stingy idiots are using crappy useless 512_1gb Ram. Instead of 2gb Ram. Ram are cheap to buy.

Capable but I dont know about smooth. Its not like oem ui's require some form of magic, most are just different layouts nothing in them should break smoothness

It's like OEM UI need some proper optimizations. If WP allowed OEM to skin it would have lagged if OEMs doesn't optimized it well. Most are not some layouts they comes with many features and heavy graphics like touch wiz and sense. And if not proper optimized it'll lag. Just like apps if not optimized right, skins will also lags.

Wait....heavy graphics?

Yes. Compared to stock UI skins touch wiz and sense has much more graphical elements.

and when WP gets in trouble with long resume time and apps crashing/closing without any multitasking, people on the WP boat are like "It has only 512mb of ram, so it's okay. You will be okay if the device has more ram."

16. elitewolverine

Why would it get in trouble? Resume is better than real lag. Real lag is when the os doesnt respond resume means it responds and is loading.

Sometimes it wont resume at all. And sometime it resume but it takes times to respond. I've experienced it on apps like UC browser, ie, Adobe reader etc. Sometimes it simply crash while resuming and go directly to start screen but start screen won't respond for a while. I use WP but I won't pretend it wont lag ever. Because I've experienced enough. These resuming/lagging issue is much higher on 512mb devices than on high end ones. WP indeed need more ram to perform great. It perform okay on 512mb ram but it needs a GB ram minimum to perform right. Source: From my experience.

So app crashing is now a wp thing? and only a 512mb thing? I own over half a dozen wp devices in my family that I am constantly looking after in terms of showing older people how to use etc. While yes there is app crashes, the amount of OS crashes, slowdowns etc, on my 635, 520's (7 in total for low ends) is so minimal that we would be most likely nitpicking. Of course I haven't used my 520 as a daily driver for a few months now since switching to my 930/925, but never to the amount you try to portray in the post. Then again, I guess I get jaded when 90% of my day goes to literally troubleshooting android devices. Just today I had to master reset 3 HTC M8's after lollipop update cause they were getting a ui crash and some dub crash upon startup and could do nothing on the devices even in safe mode.

Oh yes they are from my experience and I'm not making it up. App crashing is present in both 3 OSs. And when it comes to WP when a app crashes my home screen and whole system gets laggy. But not much in higher end devices because they have high end hardware which helps them to recover fast. It ain't minimal in low ends.not at all. But I'm fine because they are low end phones. And I've own a Moto G (1st edition) and it is pretty stable and lag free and I've only reset the device like 2 times is faster than 520 and 535 which I own (may b becuz it has snap 400). And for m8, My bro has one. He kinda get bored with most devices but ended up using m8. He used lumia 1520(I recommend it) and got bored with the UI and lack of games turned him off and BTW it has the same"resuming" problem(but much lower than mine) he always say that it is the "WP version of modern lag". And then brought an s5. Soon sold it out too because of terrible UI(he didn't like touch wiz at all, though like some of its features) and hates the design. Then nexus 6 which he finds not so attractive/premium. Then finally brought M8 and now satisfied with it(he is not so camera guy). Now got lollipop and he is fine with it.

one person experience do not dictate the rest, I still respect your opinion. Its just like the problem people say they were facing with the 1520 where it was too sensitive, later on they found out it was a hard ware issue. The point I was making there was one or two people who had the problem, but it do not mean everyone else get those problems. in my case I do not have the problem your friend had with the 1520, but I am glad he found a phone that work for him, my friend is a HTC fan too. The point people on here was trying to make is if you take 10 windows phone and 10 android will out perform those other phones with less lag and problems......This my first phone I never had to reboot or start over from scratch after 1 year......I do not know if you know about the curse of android phones where they get slower after one you have to do a hard reset. and yes I switch from a Note 3 when the 1520 came out

Yes I agree. "one person experience do not dictate the rest" like he has to reset his m8 3 times after updating but my bro is very fine with the update. I know android getting slow after a long usage because of garbage collection cach etc. But google management on these stuffs has changed alot. Anyway what they want to say is "10 windows phone and 10 android will out perform those other phones with less lag and problems" they just want to shout over and over again that android is laggy as hell as always and always will be. And I don't think "windows will out perform those other phones with less lag and problems......" I don't think it'll outperform at all. Android has improved so much since gingerbreed and people simply can't accept this fact. And I'm a WP user because I like the platform and I love to use and no plan to switch and has many hope for windows 10. But I respect other platforms & happy that we got choice.

No, not my m8 3 times, 3 m8's for my job. As a whole yes, wp with much less hardware capacity like a 520 or htc 8x will perform in everyday tasks just as well as an s4. Not saying all androids are laggy all the time. But, when you sit there with tech phones all day, and you grab something like the L90 vs a 635, our 635s in a large whole outperform it in smoothness. The only difference is that the L90 has double the ram. Yes I get resume screen, but there is a huge difference in me touching the screen getting resume and then it loads, and me touching the l90 and nothing happening. Or when you slide through menu and the menu literally stutters on its own animation half the time. But then again, I am probably jaded as I have stated many times before. So far my Z3 has been a hoot to own, much nicer in terms of playing nice than my note 3.

Good point. there is lag in 512MB ram devices both in Lumia 520 and 535. As you mentioned these resuming lag is a headache. Sometimes it wont resume at all. Ram is indeed needed for better multitasking whether it is WP or Android.
