Sony announces Xperia models eligible for update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow

They say that good things come to those who wait. We're not exactly sure if that statement is valid in the realm of smartphones, but we do know that Android 6.0 is coming to a number of Sony Xperia smartphones and tablets. We can't say when it is going to land, but it sure is on its way, as Sony reassures us.

A day after Google made the Marshmallow update available for a number of Nexus devices, including the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6, Sony posted a list of Xperia devices eligible for an update to Google's latest treat. Sony will make Android 6.0 available for the following smartphones:

  • Sony Xperia Z5
  • Sony Xperia Z5 Compact
  • Sony Xperia Z5 Premium
  • Sony Xperia Z3+ (And Xperia Z4, we assume)
  • Sony Xperia Z3
  • Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
  • Sony Xperia Z2
  • Sony Xperia M5
  • Sony Xperia C5 Ultra
  • Sony Xperia M4 Aqua
  • Sony Xperia C4

And these are the Sony tablets bound to get Android 6.0 Marshmallow at some point in the future:

  • Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
  • Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet
  • Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet

Of course, there's fine print to the whole story. First of all, there's no word as to when Android 6.0 will land on each and every Sony Xperia smartphone eligible for an update. Although it seems safe to assume that the latest high-end Xperia models will be the first to be updated, followed by Sony's lower-tier handsets. Furthermore, timing and availability will vary from one market to another. The carrier your Xperia is on may have an impact as well.

The 6.0 Marshmallow update brings a number of new features to the Android experience, including improvements to battery life, enhanced search thanks to Google on Tap, better control over app permissions, and support for the Android Pay system for mobile payments. Excited about them landing on your Xperia smartphone? Let us know in the comments!

No one? Just not a large percentage, that's all. Irrelevant, maybe. But quality, that's for sure.

So that's why z3 compact was the best selling phone in japan for april 2014? They may have low global sales but sony will never be irrelevant, just look at the brands using their camera sensors.

I'm also going to upgrade to a Z5 premium from my Z2. Which color will you get?

I'm thinking about the white because I'm not sure if I like the different front and back color. Beside, I usually throw a case on my phone. White would be a nice change from my black Z2

Sony has done well updating their first Generation Xperia Z series devices. From 4.1 to 5.1.1. RIght now, I am not dissappointed that my Xperia Tablet Z has stopped at 5.1.1 because Sony has given so much to it and it is perfect. So I kinda expected the 1st Gen Xperia Z series will not get 6.0.

Hmm I wonder if the Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition (2013) still has a 6.0 update chance directly from Google.

I think Sony chose to end the support for the Z1, Z1 Compact and Z Ultra series just because for the users of it to upgrade to Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium respectively in which the Z1 series started the small, medium and large form factor groupings. But if there will be a chance, I hope and I request Sony to have my Z1 a good taste of Marshmallow as the last and final update. It's been a very great support from Sony from 4.2, 4.3, 4.4.2, 4.4.4, 5.0.2, and now 5.1.1.
