Sony Xperia 5 battery life test results are in: great for gaming!
The Sony Xperia 5 is a surprisingly good compact phone with top tier specs. It’s the smaller version of the company's flagship -- the Xperia 1, and it’s very comfortable to use, has amazing cameras, but what about its battery life?

The Xperia 5 features a 3,140 mAh battery, which is about the average size for a compact phone these days, so how does it perform in the daily grind?

To understand this, we test phones rigorously using three different components: we test browsing, then YouTube video playback, and last, but not least, we test 3D gaming endurance.

Browsing Test

First, let's start with browsing. For this test we are opening the same set of pages across different phones using the Chrome browser on Android and we also scroll around. This puts the phone under a specific load and if you read a lot of news or use social media, this test is a great indication of how long you can expect your phone to last. The Xperia 5 scores about 8 hours and 30 minutes here, which is below the average.

YouTube video playback

Next up, we test YouTube video playback. This might be the most important test as so many people stream video a ton on their phones and we are certainly no exception. Here, the Xperia 5 finishes with a score of about 6 hours and a half. This, again, is a bit lower than the average score, so if you watch a lot of YouTube videos, the Sony phone will die a bit quicker than most others.

3D gaming

Finally, we test 3D gaming, and this result will tell you how long you can expect your phone to last if you are playing games like Fortnite or Asphalt on it. And you might be surprised but despite its smaller battery, the Xperia scores almost 6 hours on this test, which is an impressive result. Sony seems to be doing some optimizations here and the Xperia 5 outlasts many of the top phones in terms of battery life. We have seen similarly good results from the Xperia 1 and we are not sure what black magic Sony does for gamers (we have reached out to ask), but it’s definitely working!

Оverall, the Xperia 5 features a good battery life that stands out in gaming, but is a bit below the average for browsing the web, social media and video.

What is your experience with the Sony Xperia 5 and would you buy this compact phone that stands out from the rest with its looks?

What exactly you think is not right with this battery test?

Y'all really should just start ignoring dudes like that. I get wanting to respond to your audience and all, but he didn't offer anything worth responding to. If he had a suggestion as to how you can improve the test he would've said so.

Nice try at brown nosing him Kiko. I, and many others, have been critical of PA's battery tests for a long time. My reasons are stated below and based on their incomplete methodology.

Then you should've made it clear in your previous post instead of being an ass.

Victor we are still waiting for you to post your battery test scripts for smartphones in general. Nevermind any other battery test that you do.

Journalists used to be held to a higher standard but that's obviously not the case anymore since the advent of bloggers, etc. Anyway, the point is that "TheOracle1" was replying to a comment in which he/she was perplexed about how being a great remote controller translates into a test of battery stamina. Maybe English is not your native language and that deserves consideration as well as praise for knowing another language in the first place.

What's wrong with your battery tests? It's very simple. You don't test every aspect of the phone. It's called a phone for a reason and talk-time should be included. That's why your battery stats differ from most other tests and don't reflect real-world use. It would be even better if you included voip and video calls. It's generally acknowledged that every iPhone apart from the 11 Pro Max has poor talk-time numbers but you don't bother testing that for reasons best known to yourselves. If you tested and gave a weighted score between video, web browsing and talk-time based on modern phone habits that would be a balanced test. Your test is like turning on the A/C and stereo in a car on the showroom floor and giving a score without driving it.

Uhm, okay. This is the first time we publish this new test and you already have an opinion about it and somehow have managed to compare it to all others all in one minute? Trolling at its finest.

Don't think he is trolling. The nrs that are shown here don't speak of any talk time nrs. He has a point that the talk time is also very important only i'm not sure which phone has good or bad talk times

How come you say it falls behind competitors when it's "brsnd new" did you test all other phones too? It doesn't sound right, definitely seems fishy. Please explain

So now a phone 158mm tall is "compact" ? This is taller than the S10+. Just get an S10e for the same battery size and really compact form factor, or an S10 or S10+ for the same size but much larger battery and much larger screen.

Galaxy s10 e It's a garbage , the Xperia 5 has a better screen. Camera battery and update. Ah and Europe BEST GPU and CPU

Pfft. The S10e has a better Samsung display, better camera, better screen to body ratio, infinitely better FPS, is actually compact, has wireless charging and a headphone jack. Along with a better software package that doesn't look like it's from 2014. All at a much lower price. The Xperia 5 is the shortbus of smartphones.

What kinds of drugs do you take? lol Xperia 5 have BEST display market and camera is BEST obsoleta camera S10 e Have BEST GPU and CPU. BEST batery, BEST Features and wears a headset of 250 euros as a gift

That's adorable. No. Just no. Sony has never had a decent camera in one of their own devices as their camera software is beyond terrible. Considering it has the same CPU and GPU as the S10e, your claim is worthless. Best battery? Please. The results are above to look at. Best features? Please. Sony phones don't have any features. The Xperia 5 is a joke of a device at a joke of a price. The fact that the S10e is much cheaper AND so much better is just another indicator of how out of touch Sony is with their mobile devision.

LOL The only junk and obsolete cameras we know are those of the galaxyhttps://youtu.be/Htz4u9LCJU8 Do not compare that S10 e trash can with the god Xperia 5

I’m not. I’m comparing the Xperia 5’s camera with phones from 2014. Even then it still loses. I’m comparing it to drawings done by my 3 year old mentally disabled nephew. It still loses. It’s literally the worst device available that you can spend $800 on. It makes the iPhone look like an absolute value. It’s example #248 of why Sony is utterly hopeless in the mobile space and manages to sell like 13 devices a year.

Dude, I'm a Samsung user myself but you are embarrassing all of us.. Do some damn research before blurring out nonsense like this. Xperia 5 is a compact high-end flagship, while the 10e is just the entry level. How in the world is that better?? Also, you don't compare two phones by the camera quality unless they are equal, which they're definitely not. I only wish my S8+ can last 6 years as my old Sony phone (it's still working)

So, despite the fact that they have the same processor, same RAM, same Display, same build materials, same base storage, the s10e is an entry level device and the Xperia 5 is a high en d flagship? Seriously? Were you dropped on the head as a child? Could it be that the s10e is the affordable version of the s10 and s10+ while the Xperia 5 is the affordable version of the Xperia 1? Could it be that? Huh? Maybe?

That's my point! The Xperia 5 is too narrow and too tall.

Looking at the phone the Pixel 4 kind of resembles it. Maybe the Pixels bezels are slightly thicker, or thinner I can't tell.
