Sony Xperia 5 battery life test results are in: great for gaming!
The Sony Xperia 5 is a surprisingly good compact phone with top tier specs. It’s the smaller version of the company's flagship -- the Xperia 1, and it’s very comfortable to use, has amazing cameras, but what about its battery life?

The Xperia 5 features a 3,140 mAh battery, which is about the average size for a compact phone these days, so how does it perform in the daily grind?

To understand this, we test phones rigorously using three different components: we test browsing, then YouTube video playback, and last, but not least, we test 3D gaming endurance.

Browsing Test

First, let's start with browsing. For this test we are opening the same set of pages across different phones using the Chrome browser on Android and we also scroll around. This puts the phone under a specific load and if you read a lot of news or use social media, this test is a great indication of how long you can expect your phone to last. The Xperia 5 scores about 8 hours and 30 minutes here, which is below the average.

YouTube video playback

Next up, we test YouTube video playback. This might be the most important test as so many people stream video a ton on their phones and we are certainly no exception. Here, the Xperia 5 finishes with a score of about 6 hours and a half. This, again, is a bit lower than the average score, so if you watch a lot of YouTube videos, the Sony phone will die a bit quicker than most others.

3D gaming

Finally, we test 3D gaming, and this result will tell you how long you can expect your phone to last if you are playing games like Fortnite or Asphalt on it. And you might be surprised but despite its smaller battery, the Xperia scores almost 6 hours on this test, which is an impressive result. Sony seems to be doing some optimizations here and the Xperia 5 outlasts many of the top phones in terms of battery life. We have seen similarly good results from the Xperia 1 and we are not sure what black magic Sony does for gamers (we have reached out to ask), but it’s definitely working!

Оverall, the Xperia 5 features a good battery life that stands out in gaming, but is a bit below the average for browsing the web, social media and video.

What is your experience with the Sony Xperia 5 and would you buy this compact phone that stands out from the rest with its looks?
