Samsung Galaxy S6 Active to sport a 5.1-inch display after all?

Reportedly, the rugged version of Samsung's latest flagship handset will be powered by the same octa-core Exynos 7420 processor, offering a 16 MP rear camera, and a 5 MP front-facing camera. 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory should also be included. However, it's said that the Galaxy S6 Active will have a bigger battery (3500 mAh), measuring 146.9 x 73.6 x 8.8 mm - thus being a bit larger and thicker than both the S6 and S6 edge.
At least one Galaxy S6 Active variant (model number SM-G890A) should be released in the US by AT&T, though it's not clear when this is supposed to happen. We don't know if the S6 Active will have the same level of dust and water resistance as last year's Galaxy S5 Active (IP67), but let's hope we're going to find out soon.
P.S.: Since the Galaxy S6 Active hasn't been pictured, what we're seeing above is the S5 Active.

So it is still pretty thin while having a huge battery. Why couldn't they make this the normal S6?

I think more Samsung owners prefer a removable back to a larger battery. It's thinness vs beefier battery, having a removable cover they could've had some sort of middle ground between the two.

Because of design constraints. They're not obviously targeting the segment that want "exquisite" and "luxury" material. This is strictly aimed at consumers who have a strictly practical agenda. Battery life, water resistance, maybe cheaper materials for durability. Since they're not going for cutting edge form, they're obviously going to be more generous with device thickness

Honestly, I'm more interested in this phone than the normal S6 and even the S6 Edge. 3500 mAh? IP rating? Count me in! I could care less about what materials a phone is made out of; I just want a good looking phone that functions well. Too bad I'm stuck on a contract, or I'd be all over this phone. I'll still have to see how it is in real life, though.

Are the Active series just normal Samsung flagships but with durable cases?

Sounds amazing.... I would definitely pick this over the regular S6 but not the S6 Edge. There's something about those edges. S6 series uses smaller display than the Note 4's already beautifully optimized 5.7 inch SAMOLED screen and this model even rocks bigger battery than the Note 4 as well. All major components are now even more optimized all around than their previous flagship models(including Note line) with each successive generation Samsung has been systematically improving the power efficiency of their goods. Dust and water resistance features are always plus as long as it doesn't add too much of body and weight to the phone. I think Samsung will achieve that with this model but now that they have more space to play around I just hope they would reconsider about their SD card slot decision. First public reaction wasn't positive.

The battery alone makes this the more interesting Galaxy.

The Note 4 already has an amaizing battery life with its 5.7" Quad HD display by using a 3220 mAh. Just think about the battery life of this device. 5.1" Quad HD display, So way less power consumption than the Note 4's display + More Energy efficient 14nm Exynos 7420 SoC and a larger 3500 mAh Battery = Great battery life!
