Google Play edition Samsung Galaxy S5 accidentally outed by Google?

The Google Play edition line-up has been in flux quite a bit this year, mostly with devices being removed from the Store. At one point, the Google Play edition roster was quite varied, but right now the only options are the HTC One (M8) and the Moto G. One device that everyone expected that never arrived was the Samsung Galaxy S5 GPe, but Google may have accidentally outed it.

Obviously, today was a big day for Google with the announcement of the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Android 5.0 Lollipop; and, along with those announcements came an overhaul of the Android.com website. There is something interesting down near the bottom of the page under the "Customized by you, for you" heading. There, you'll see a number of devices, most of which can be purchased through Google Play, like the Nexus 5, Nexus 7, HTC One (M8) GPe (all of which are shown running Android 5.0), Moto 360, and LG G Watch. But, there is another device in that image: a Samsung Galaxy S5 Google Play edition.

As noted, that is not a device that is currently available for purchase. It could be that the device will soon be added to the Google Play edition roster soon. It might also have been a device planned for the Android Silver program, which has apparently lost momentum. Or, it might be nothing. We'll have to wait and see.

Give us a GPE of the Note 4 and nobody will care about the Nexus 6. lol

Nexus 6 or Android L fail completely to capitalize the big screen whereas Samsung has championed the art of phablets with its multi taking window, one handed UI option and S pen. Like it or not Touchwiz is the only UI which has actually made good use of the big screen. Both nexus 6 and iPhone 6 plus fail on that front. The only advantage of Nexus brand was the affordability and since Google took that away too, there is absolutely no reason to chose any nexus or gpe device over note 4

I was going to add as well, if Samsung makes a GPE of the Note 4, keep the stylus and keep TW's multitasking and their camera app and pretty much you have the perfect phone. TW is not flawless but it would remove all the complaints that anyone has ever had.

Lol..... If they added all that it wouldn't really be a GPE.

It would be enough to keep me happy and the haters silent, lol.

Just remove those third parties non-removable bloatware and i will get the note 4 with the vr-gear. I especially dislike Evernote as they remove the ability to disable that app as well.

People forget that this is Android. You can install other launchers. Just install Google Play launcher. I know its not exactly the same, but its close enough.

Some people can't just stand touchwiz is it so hard for you to understand . I am willing to make tradeoff for a pure nexus experience and so are most people who buy a nexus device .

So true. GPE Note 4 would be the antidote for Touchwiz.

For a phablet GPe, Note 4 would definitely get my up vote.. Now, if they could only release a GPe for a mini phone... On second thought, don't go mini, get a Compact. Sony Xperia Z3 Compact GPe... should be awesome!

Simply Gorgeous.

Now can people stop complaining about TW? Although most of its features won't be there, which makes it boring, like stock Android devices.

No. The fact that there is a GPE has no effect on the fact that TouchWiz sucks...

I take it that you're one of those who dislike TW? Sigh.

I guess Samsung has to get rid of their Galaxy S5 inventory somehow. What's next? The "Value Edition" we saw for the Galaxy S4?

Well atleast by bringing the value addition they are reducing the price unlike Sony who just rebranded the Z2 as Z3 and keeps selling them at the same exorbitant price.

Unfortunately, the S5 is just about the same exorbitant price that the Z3 is. Other than OnePlus and its HungerOne, there are no reasonably priced full spec phones that I am aware of.

I tried to be mildly sarcastic and failed :) The "value edition" for the S4 was anything but a good value!

And yet again the presence of on-screen buttons on an alleged S5 gpe.
