Developer Preview version of Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 is now available
Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 is now available, and for those who had installed the Developer Preview version of Windows Phone 8.1, all you need to do is look for an update on your phone. Those who have not signed up for the Developer Preview, can still access Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 by installing it through Microsoft's App Studio program. Two separate software versions are involved, 8.10.12400.899 and 8.10.14147.180, with the latter being the GDR1 update.

Among the new features is the Live Folders for the Start screen. This simply allows you to slide a tile over another tile, to create a folder. The update also allows those in India, Australia and Canada to use an alpha version of Cortana. China and the U.K. will have their own beta version of the personal assistant made available. With the update, you can merge multiple SMS messages together to forward or delete. And you will be able to customize your alarm's snooze settings.

If you're not signed up for the Developer Preview, and are not inclined to install the update via the App Studio program, eventually you will receive the update anyway. For those of you who managed to grab Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, you can tell us all about it by dropping your comments in the box below.

And, the fact is that these new Live Folders have risen the WP start screen to a new level.

I'd rather get rid of the f in people vs. get folders :D Also, WTF with my phone going to May 22? It is annoying as hell.

Ok... These are much more than folders.. For example, if you group three weather applications up into a folder, they retain their respective tile size, and position, but can also be altered within the folder.. So, when collapsed the folder will scroll through the live information on each tile... It's really quite ingenious, and very useful... ............. But, what's really impressive is the polish of the entire process.. I mean MS really did a good job with the fluidity, animations, and behavior of the Live Folder system.. It's really impressive, and makes you want to play with the the LF's action over and over.. This is really well thought out engineering, some of what the "Action Centre" could borrow from... It's nice how you can label the folders by doing a long press then taping the negative space to complete your entry... But, fill a folder with 10, or 20 medium sized tiles, and you get an awesome cascade of falling live tiles.. It just works!!... Seriously this is some of the best work I've seen by MS, and the Live Folder system needs to make its way to W8... I'm very, very pleased!

Personally, I don't care about live tiles. I just like how the entire system can be accented by a color chosen by the user. But to each his own :)

ah I feel the same way about icons, if it wasn't for widgets I would feel cheated by my note 3 purchase. The live folders make all other folders available through their stock system imo obsolete, and makes android feel very dated. Maybe I need to play with my droid more....

Great way to bury this story. Twelve hours late, might as well have not posted it again. Thank you for the story on BlackBerry though.

I'd rather have it on my device first, than hear it from PA first.... WPC has my back!!!

One thing i immediately noticed, is the battery drain. Lumia 625. Usually on 8.1 it took more than 5 hours to drop from 100 to 90. On the new update, from 100 to 77%, took just 2 hours. I will test a little bit more to find out if this drain is related to a program running on this update.

So, I'm not imaging things... Have you noticed how MS always follows up each update with one to fix battery drain?... It's almost like they wait to get the volunteered data from our devices to see how they are behaving... But, there's always an update for battery drain...... Oh well, better than no update..

It might have to do with the new Live Folders, since we're all presumably taking advantage of that feature. I don't know about you, but I now have a lot more Live Tiles on my start screen than before, but contained within these folders. Maybe the additional Live Tiles could be at least partially to blame?

Good point!!.. It's nothing MS can't optimize... They haven't failed us yet when it comes to performance!

I haven't noticed one bit. After the update lots of things are still happening in the background like stuff being installed. On my 925 even with life folders (about 30 apps in all), my battery went from 20% down to 14% over 6hours and 2 phone calls that lasted 20mins total. Not that much texting, did take about 9 pics though. And watched a few music videos. Could be the battery savor vs being fully charged though.

Wasn't expecting much out of this update since it's technically a fairly minor update, but I love the Live Folders feature. We already had the ability to do folders via Nokia's "App Folder" app, but Microsoft's implementation is amazing. The Live Folder shows updates for the live tiles contained within, the tiles within can be customized in terms of size and placement, and the animations are brilliant. Small addition but changes the way you use the start screen. For those who don't know, some of the other things added in this update include: - Internet sharing via Bluetooth - App Corner (basically can have multiple user profiles for multiple people to use the phone) - Added snooze timing options for Alarms and Reminders - Support for more resolutions - Support for smart phone covers - Support for wearables - Consumer VPN - secures your phone when on public Wi-Fi - Enables rapid charging - Other core app improvements

Yeah there are a few more things, but don't know all of it off the top of my head. I'm sure WPC has a list somewhere.

Grats on your update WP users. Any OS update is kind of kool, even for other teams. Salute.

I am bit dissappointed coz Lumia Cyan update(WP8.1) is still not available in India, and MS is launching Update 1 as DP in other countries

Lol!!.. I think MS released the Black DP update before I got Amber... I'm not complaining about a higher sense of urgency from MS with WP...

hmm I downgraded my Nokia 928 back to Windows 8 to get ready for the Verizon official update to Windows 8.1 boy am I sorry I did that since I heard it may be september before Verizon updates their Windows smart to Windows phone 8.1. DAMN I hope Verizon does not have it's Windows smart phone customers wait that damn long they have being testing Windows 8.1 for some time now What's the holdup. I guess by the time Verizon is ready we will get updated to Windows 8.1 and get the Windows 8.1 first update at the same time. if we do get it all I hope that it does not brick Verizon Windows Lumia smart phones smart phones.

Yeah, I decided not to downgrade my Verizon Lumia 928 and instead wait for them to release a fix for the Cyan update problem, then continue the Cyan rollout. So now have 8.1 Update 1, but still waiting on Cyan. Hope they can fix things sooner rather than later. MS may be good about sending out updates, but lately the updates have had problematic releases with very delayed fixes.
