Apple's next generation tablet just a stop-gap until Apple iPad 3 launch in Q3 2012?

Apple's next generation tablet just a stop-gap until Apple iPad 3 launch in Q3 2012?
A report in Thursday's DigiTimes says that Apple is about to put into production the next-gen version of its tablet. Sources from the upstream supply chain tell the site that Apple is not considering this device to be the Apple iPad 3, considering it to be more of an upgraded Apple iPad 2. While this report certainly needs to be taken with a grain of salt, the story says that that it won't be until the third quarter of 2012 when the Cupertino based firm will rollout the Apple iPad 3. This would dovetail with earlier reports we passed on to you that the Apple iPad 3 would not hit the marketplace in 2011.

While the tablet going into production now is only a stop-gap device, that doesn't mean that there aren't any positive changes. The upgraded iPad 2 is expected to be thinner than the current model and offer longer battery life. DigiTimes adds that due to the Chinese Lunar New Year Holidays in January, Apple will begin to ship small amounts of the upgraded iPad 2 this quarter. There is no rush for Apple to refresh its current tablet as some retailers are telling DigiTimes that the current Apple iPad 2 remains the most popular tablet in the IT market at present.

What is this? Let me Guess... iPad 2S? The iPad 2 was not the best tablet. I don't get it why all the tablets today are compared to the iPad. And if the Asus Prime is coming out soon, who would buy this tablet if it's priced at around $900??? with obviously no quad core yet.

they are all compared to the ipad simply because it is the best and people know they want their hard earned money to be spent on something that will last them for a long time unlike anything android puts out which will be out of date in like a month.

and every andro tablet is just oversized andro phone. Great logic! ...and please...andro is so buggy and immature. Don't recommend it to everyone.

I own a Galaxy Tab 10.1, an iPad 2, and an HP Touchpad. All of them have had app crashes, even the iPad. Sorry man, the statement that the iPad is bug free is a myth.

well all smartphone are mini computers so if you think about it all tablets or new hybrids are all smaller or bigger version of each other... what's your point???

Its pretty obvious why people compare all current tablets to the ipod, you dont have to be the sharpest tool in the shed to understand why. Its just like the article says "the current Apple iPad 2 remains the most popular tablet in the IT market at present." Just because someone doesnt like apple doesnt mean that their products are not made better and work better then other ones currently on the market. There is a reason why they out sell other products, if they werent quality then they wouldnt be number one sellers. Even though they might not have the biggest processor or highest amout of ram or whatever spec you might think of, they just perform better. Sometimes an apple product might have a bug or two, they are not perfect. The difference with apple is that they will fix it and make sure its right. they pay attention to the small details and make things with percesion. If you really look at an apple product its easy to the see what sets them apart and why they are always on top. Its just common sense

O "i dont get it why all the tablets today are compared to the ipad." Its so wierd that they use the product that out sells all the other products as something to be compared to. Yea that doesnt make any sense. I cant understand it, Its wierd that the ipad outsells all other tablets it must just be chance that they sell more then other products, there is no reason why people like them better then anything else. they just are no good and dont work right that probably why so many people buy them and keep buying them because they are not as good as an android tablet. People buy the worst product for a reason.

I'm on a friends account but this is Scuba_Steve. I have said it a million times and will say it a million times more. Just because a product sells more doesn't really mean it's a better. Apple has a great marketing team and they have a great name for themselves because of it. For every customer that comes in asking for an android tablet(vzw). There are easily about 5 people who don't even know that there are other tablets available. They're buying the name rather than the actual product.

Weird the tech is out right now and especially by beginning f next year to have a retna display. Quad core with a greatly improved gpu. If you look at the droid razor than there is know way that it needs to wait till next year. They used to be way ahead of competition now apple is about at par with the rest. I really think that they might fall by the way side within the next three years.

If there's one thing we know about Apple, in recent history there's always a stop gap between major product launches....

true...which i've always wondered why everyone expects more when this has been Apple's trend since the iPhone 3G.

Define fail. Android occupies the majority of the smartphone market. In fact, if Apple doesn't step up their innovation instead of suing Samsung, they are going to start to bleed market share. Personally, I would rather have a Windows 8 tablet than android or ios anyway. http://images.dailytech.com/nimage/22094_large_Smart_Phone_Market_Share_Nielsen_August.png

Define fail? Look at android tablet sales for a definition lol. Sure android phones do good when they're given away free. No one wants to pay for androids beta OS.

Lol. Your iOS 5 notification bar is a fail. Battery Drains on a OS that does almost nothing but launches apps and twitter integration is a fail. iOS can't even play Flash - - - and tablets are supposed to fill the gap between Computers and Phones but still no FLASH? You Apple Users boast about build quality and the like. Apple products are like diamonds. Expensive Useless Crap for boasting.

And yet no one is buying android tablets at all. How can that be? They have FLASH. Android tablets are one of the biggest tech failures of 2011.

Um, I bought an Android tablet... You shoot yourself in the foot by making such ridiculously broad statements, and its because you are afraid of the facts. "Fandroids can't handle the truth"-taco You wouldn't be able to find the truth even if your iPhone had turn by turn navigation.

the ipad dominates the tablet market.. for now. that much is true. part of the problem with android tablet tracking, is they only track honeycomb tablets not tablets based off of 2.2 or 2.3... which there are a lot of.

Your are exactly right apple products are like diamonds. You couldnt have been more right. But every product is counted and the ipad is now and always the top seller by far. the products are a little expensive for a reason, you pay for what you get. A mercedes is always more expensive then a ford for a reason. You cant argue with staticstics. Its painfully obvious if android was a better product then there tablets would out sell the ipad. But they dont. IF someone might think Apple's products are over rated, then it would show after people purchased them and realized that they werent as good as they were suppose to be, and sales would drop. Doesnt look like sales are dropping to me. So try again. It doesnt matter if some hard headed people dont like the ipad and apple, and talk bad about it. Its fine because everyone else will. Its funny how people fell the need to put something else down and point out all the faults about something when they fell insecure about what they have.

iPad has zero competition. They don't even need to upgrade it at all and it will still outsell all other tablets combined.

Maybe for another 1-2 years. Android tablets are so-so at best right now. At that point, they will eventually be bulldozed down to their 20-30% market share

Android tablets won't sell unless they're subsidized down to free

They happen to be first to market. The same that happened to Macs vs PCs, iPhone vs Android phones will ring true with iPads vs Tablets 1,000's of engineers at dozens of companies will quickly decimate the Apple competition. Apple's presence in any given segment can be defined by y=1/x
