Sony announced last month its goal to become
the first non-Google OEM to release Android 7.1.1 Nougat for its smartphones. Although the update is not yet available for any of Sony's smartphones, the Japanese company very close to achieving its goal.
It looks like
Xperia X owners can now download an Android 7.1.1 Nougat “Concept” build, assuming they don't have anything against testing beta software.
In order to be able grab the new Android 7.1.1 Nougat update on the Xperia X, you must download the
Concept Installer application in the Google Play store. Keep in mind though that this is an “experimental” build, so you'll probably encounter some stability issues.
It's worth noting that Sony has added some improvements of its own, aside from the new features included in
Android 7.1.1 Nougat. For example, there's a new Restart option in the power off menu.
Also, Sony confirmed it has added support for PlayStation 4 remote-play, but DualShock support is not available at the moment. Perhaps the stable build will add support for PlayStation 4's controller as well.
The short changelog also mentions faster camera startup time. Sony included the
December security patch too, so you'll be almost up to date with the latest security updates released by Google.
