Viber for Android exits beta stage, brings free calling and texting to your Android smartphone
After a couple of months of beta testing, Viber for Android has been officially made available for download from the Android Market, which means that iOS users are not the only ones granted with the privilege to use the popular mobile VoIP app anymore. Starting today, owners of Android-powered smartphones will also be able to make free calls to other Viber users over Wi-Fi or 3G without spending their precious monthly minute allowance.

In case you have not tried Viber before, we have to tell you that you have been missing quite a lot. The app requires no registration whatsoever and is absolutely free of charge. Besides that, it has a built-in texting feature that lets you send messages to other Viber users, and the sound quality that it provides is superior to what you would get from a call placed over a cellular line. Add to all that its ability to integrate seamlessly with your device's contacts list and you have one neat little app that you will probably find yourself using more and more frequently every day.

So, if you have not done so already, grab Viber from the Android Market and see what over 12 million Viber users have been enjoying. As for all the BlackBerry owners out there, there is no need to get jealous as an official BlackBerry version of the app is also coming down the road.

If people didnt figure it out, to make the call, the person you are calling has to have the Viber app as well. You cannot call from Viber to mobile/landline and vice versa

No it can't. Google voice can go international without costing you money.

Hi, This is a member of the Viber Development Team! Thank you for your review of Viber. We are very happy that so many people worldwide are interested in our application. Regarding your questions: Viber for WP7 is planned, but it's still too early to talk about release dates. About the fact that Viber can only make calls between Viber users - When you think about it, this isn't different from any other *free* communication app out there. Viber allows you to call/text for free anyone else who has Viber installed. Otherwise, you'd just make normal calls/texts as you would anyway. Namely, you can only benefit from it :) If anyone has any questions/suggestions for Viber, please feel free to write, and I will address them shortly. Thanks, Viber.

i've been a beta tester and then and even now, my viber is not recognizing viber users from out of country(USA). i have their number saved in my contacts with and without country code, but does not show up as viber user. apparently they it recognizes me as a viber user in their phone since they were able to viber call them, but i am unable to call them.

There is a known issue with recognizing contacts and we're working to fix it. For now, as suggested, reinstall Viber. Wait a few minutes, and If it still doesn't work, try the following workaround: Enter Viber and find a person you know has Viber in the "All" contact list. Enter his details, change a digit, save and exit. Then enter his contact again, change the digit back (to the original, correct number), save and exit. Wait about 10 minutes and see if he's recognized as a Viber user now. If it doesn't work, please try manually dialing the number in its FULL format (including the "+" sign, the country code, area code, etc.)
