The old Android "blob" emoji: do you like them?

So, among the many new things in Android O, we will get another refresh of the way emoji look. For years now, stock Android's emoticons have retained a unique, blob-like shape, keeping them similar to the Android mascot's head. However, the "blob emoji" aren't really loved by users, often referred to as ugly.

Major manufacturers that use Android as their phone's operating system are always eager to replace the emoji with their own set. Basically, the blob heads are only present on Google's Pixel and Nexus phones, as well as the few phones out there that run vanilla Android. Well, when the O update rolls out, the blobs will be gone, and we will have more conventionally-looking emoji.

What's your take on that?

These were the most terrible emoji ever. Shapeless blobs.

I've totally grown to love the blob with sunglasses over the years though. He's cool. Ha, geddit?

Looks like I'm with the minority who actually like these blobs.

I agree! Even the Android green ones when you type the characters for them to come up are terrible.

I'm pretty sure these were based off a Japanese style called Emoji. Everyone else copied the name

I love some of the emojis on Whatsapp. Should get rid of emojis which are too small and difficult to tell the differences.

By the way, the emoji with some updated "fashion" would be nice!

I really dislike the Whatsapp emoji. I use them because changing them is too big of a hassle. But would prefer that all apps use the system emoji and not their own (or at least offer this option).

You are fully right, but there were a couple of issues with that:
1. Whatsapp had emojis BEFORE the system ones were ready, I think this is true for both Android and iOS (only sure on Android)
2. If you do that then Whatsapp emojis would be system dependent, draining the user experience of Whatsapp (as the user would see different emojis on different platforms.

Anyway: I actually like the Whatsapp emoji the most, so I´m OK with them being different than the rest.

You do have a good point that they are sure they have all the latest emoji this way. And it's not a big issue for me anyway since I use 5/6 smileys altogether. Not really a big say it with a smiley kinda guy.

While I use Emoji one most of the times, I kinda liked those blobbies. There is even an petition going on where people want the old cat emoji back in O, the new one is very disliked.

One thing I had to give to iOS is their EMOJI game. These were pretty bad.

I feel like I'm using old outdated emojis with Google's emojis. Pretty much everyone has better emojis than Google's blobs.

I wish all emoji were the same. Are they copyrighted or something. Why us it so hard. Switching between platforms and having to search for an emoji is a pain. Sometimes you can hardly tell they are supposedly the same.

Frankly, when I switched from iOS, they looked like a downgrade to me. But I'm not that into emojis, so, couldn't care less which I use, so long as they have the one for the emotion I want to show...
