Text message puts swimming coach in jail

Text message puts swimming coach in jail
When Craig Evans sent a sultry text to his girlfriend, the last thing he expected was to wind up behind bars. Yet that is what happened to the 24-year-old swimming coach from Birmingham, UK when he sent that message not only to his girlfriend, but his entire address book in his BlackBerry. That is a pretty embarrassing moment and one that would not easily be forgotten by friends or family for…forever.

Many of his contacts are his students, aged in their early teens, whom he coaches. When they received a message asking for “skin on skin” sex, that raised some eyebrows. As you might expect, the UK has laws about soliciting sex from minors. He was arrested for criminal mass text on charges of inciting a child to engage in sex. He was sentenced to 18 months in jail.

For what many would regard as a serious “fat-fingering” of messaging, that is a pretty brutal sentence. Fortunately for Evans, the presiding judge over the case agreed. Lord Justice Elias noted, “The facts of this case are rather unusual. Messages…were sent to every single contact in his phone, including members of his own family.” The Justice further cited Evans was misguided in how to use his BlackBerry and suspended the sentence under the circumstances which freed the embarrassed Evans from jail.

Evans is a free man. Free to face the merciless ribbing of friends, family and indeed his girlfriend.

Poor guy. Though I'll lose a bit of sympathy for him if he sues Blackberry over this.

This story is from England; they have enough dignity over there to not sue over something you did to yourself and act like it's something someone should've prevented.

Nevertheless, it doesn't excuse him for sending the mass-text in the first place. That's exactly what is wrong with the World today (especially corporate America), people no longer pay attention to detail and then, when they make mistakes or screw-up, they want allowances with a simple iSorrryyyy. Just take a look at Apple and their Apple Maps fiAsco?? I say triple his jail time to 54 months: 18 months for the mass-text and twice as long for using a Blackberry.

i have an iphone but have used all others and i'd say its MUCH more likely to send erroneous texts to people on an iPhone than any other device. with auto "reply all" to mms messages when imessage and group messaging is on it can be down right dangerous. I've personally seen so many messages sent to all from various iphone users replying hours later to a group message but meaning it to be 1-1... prefect example was my bf sending out a pic of his yr old son to family and friends last week and then when his wife got off work she replied... "awww, thanks for the pic hun. just what i need after a long day... know what else i need? one hint: i'm not wearing any panties"....shouldve seen all the replies from moms and thjose of us friends that like to bust balls. lol. No lie that was less than a month ago and an iphone disaster.

Were he using an iPhone - the text would probably have reached the Queen as well. :P I wonder how she would have reacted to "skin on skin sex". :P
