In times of crisis, donations from strangers for a worthy cause brings the best out of everyone – even after the tragic events that have ravaged Haiti. We’ve already witnessed the impact of what a mobile phone
can accomplish – like how a trapped woman was able to send a text message
and subsequently rescued. Donations have been pouring from a variety of outlets, but wireless users provided over $10 million in donations for the efforts in Haiti; according to the Mobile Giving Foundation. Out of the $37 million that the Red Cross has received from donations, roughly $8 million of that have emanated from mobile phones. Jim Manis, Mobile Giving Foundation’s CEO, has been noted saying that an estimated 10,000 donations are being sent a second using SMS to other foundations like the Red Cross and Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund. As the country recovers from this natural disaster, clearly the willingness of people using mobile phones has really been highlighted.
