Opera Mini 8 for older handsets brings a new look and three new features

Posted: , by Luis D.

Opera Mini, the version of the browser for older devices that run Java-based platforms, has been updated to version 8. There's a new look and a new set of features is available. The updated version has a new Speed Dial start page with redesigned tiles, as well as the addition of Night mode, improved data savings reports, and Private mode.

The Night mode feature works as usual, dimming your device's screen so it doesn't strain your eyes when viewed in the dark. The data-savings page lets you see and adjust how much data you're able to shave off your time spent browsing – the traffic exhausted could be shrunk down to to as little as 10% of its original size. Private mode offers private tabs that don't save any information when they are closed.

Opera Mini is free and available from Opera's mobile page.

I used it my old phone because it was so fast. I don't use it anymore now that my latest phone is fast enough. Opera Mini just want a full featured browser.

Trying it now on my Sony Ericsson Aspen.

First impressions: Lags quite a bit (given the hardware, I'd be surprised if it didn't lag at all). Design is quite reminiscent of iOS 7. Loads pages faster than Opera Mobile 10, which I was using for quite a while. D-pad works better too. Disqus nearly works properly, but then again I won't be doing much commenting on this phone

Overall, Opera made an already awesome browser more awesome by adding features and polishing the aesthetics, and I think everyone should give it a try.

Just tried it on my NOKIA E7-00

Works like a charm, lags a bit on opening and closing, but overall very good...

This browser will give a fresh breath to all those Asha "smartphones" used it during my s!s40 days and still using it now on Android when the connection is relatively slow. Wish to see the developers support Wp8.
