Nova Launcher 4.0 update brings more Material Design goodness
Nova Launcher, one of the best Android launchers for both smartphones and tablets, just got a pretty big update earlier today. Version 4.0 of the popular launcher comes with full Material Design support, and also includes a range of new features that allow for ultimate control over the user interface.

Nova Launcher 4.0 comes with more animations, a bunch of bundled wallpapers, as well as new icons, but the fun does not end here. With the updated version, users can change individual icon layouts by tweaking the size or the font of a particular icon in the home screen or the app drawer, perform a quick search by pulling down when in the application drawer, or even search for widgets.

These official screenshots shed some light on how the new features come into play:

Nova Launcher was already one of the best-looking Android launchers available in the Google Play store, and with the new update, it looks like this home screen replacement just got even better. The pricing remains the same as before. A feature-limited version of the launcher is available for free download, while the full version is priced at $4.

Here's the full changelog for Nova Launcher version 4.0:

Not as nice. I hate the new black dots on white circle in the app drawer for access to the apps. It looks cheap. I hate not being able to get at widgets from the tab next to apps. The major reason for liking Nova was being able to change the look of the launcher, now they've locked it down onto md. I've Uninstalled it and gone back to 3.3. IMHO, Material Design is cartoonish, and why my next phone is unlikely to be Android.

It nice eye candy and quicker, but I don't understand why they had to remove some of the useful customization features that were found in 3.3. I also went back to 3.3 unless you want to have a portable charger in your bag/pocket. :-)

Moving apps to folders in the app drawer (image 5) is irritating now. If you have more than a couple of folders, you have to scroll to find the right one because the window is so small. It was better in the older version where all the folders were visible and could be selected without scrolling. Otherwise, it's more Metro. Nova is still a great launcher though.

It still is the best no nonsense launcher imho. Good to see that they're progressing steadily.

Hmm....I don't really notice much of a difference, other then a few wallpapers I'll never use, and a slight difference in the animations. But still my "go to" launcher for the last 3 years.
