The HTC One A9 is the latest smartphone that's supposed to entice users and save the company from peril. With an affordable price tag, attractive (if all too familiar) design, and a fluid interface, HTC's new hero phone certainly has a lot going for it. But even these qualities are tough to stand out with in a world where at least 10 viable alternatives that run Android are positioned in the same $400 price segment.

Not each and every of them is an exact match for HTC's new American flagship, but each has something of its own to bring forth, spark your interest, and possibly sway you away from buying a brand new A9! Such is the nature of competition, fellas, so check out these 10 alternatives choices. Meanwhile, we're wishing all the best to HTC, for as you can see, the company will need a lot of luck to survive in the so aggressively competitive Android market!

Probably hard to go through all the better phones to narrow it down to 10.

But still costs about twice the price of Xiaomi's Mi Note. Wonder if HTC will make it

It's not the aluminum, it's the design. That there is no One M8. Where are the dual front speakers? The gently curved back? Gone and gone.

iPhone 6 is an iPod Touch 5 with antenna bands. even the iPad Mini has the same design language. Xperia Z line and iPhone 4 doesn't look similar with the same design language. this HTC A9 looks like a chinese iPhone rip-off with that square home button, complete with a protruding camera and the exact rounded corners.

Hopefully Qualcom makes the next generation SD to run a bit cooler.

Would have branded desire series, one series just can't fit in

Why would anyone want this underpowered midranged smartphone? Yuck. I don't understand why this is getting so much coverage.

The term "underpowered" is relative. This phone is obviously pitched at the users who only call, text, email... Maybe some YouTube.. But at this point even an "underpowered" processor is enough to get basic day to day tasks for the average working individual. I hope htc survives long enough to revive the original one series because this is not my style at all, however they did need to do something to appease the average user who has no idea what a snapdragon is.

Please stop listing "bigger screen" as an advantage. Many of us see it as a disadvantage. List it as neutral differentiator.

I was just about to comment that.. I actually refuse to get a phone larger than the 5.2" xperia series... And even that will be giving more than I want. The nexus 5 (2013) is the sweet spot in size for me.

+ pretty much any of last year's flagships. M8, Z3, Moto X(2014), Nexus 6, all retail for lower now.

Retail? Show me where I can get a brand new m8, z3, moto x, or nexus 6 for 399 from the official oem website. All the phones you listed are in different classes anyway.. Plus none of them support quick charge. I'm not really a fan of the a9 by any means but this comment is reaching.

Clone or not it is better looking than any of those other phones and to a lot of people that is what counts.
