Google announces restructuring; parent company to be called Alphabet
This afternoon, Google has announced a major restructuring of the company. Google will now be owned by a publicly traded umbrella company called Alphabet, which will be run by CEO Larry Page. Sergey Brin will be president of the holding company, and Eric Schmidt will hold the title of Executive Chairman. Google's new CEO will be Sundar Pichai.

Google will now report separate financial reports. The businesses that will operate under the Google name are search, ads, maps, apps, YouTube and Android. Businesses like Nest, Fiber, Google Ventures, Google Capital, and Google X will not be the responsibility of Google after the restructuring.

The stock will convert to shares of Alphabet on a one-to-one basis. For example, those with 100 share of Google will end up with 100 shares of Alphabet, which will trade under the same GOOG and GOOGL symbols on NASDAQ.

Investors love the change so far, with the stock up over $32 or more than 5% after-hours.

Yea this makes it more clearer. Investors are a paranoid bunch. Understandable but still. Damn I wish I had invested with Google when they were still a small time search engine....

Nothing new here. Samsung and Hyundai did this decades ago.

Google will continue to be Google. They are cleaning their org structure - just like they have been cleaning the Andriod interface - aka, Material Design. The market/analysts love it. It is a very savvy move.

Why Alphabet though? I mean, what does that have to do with anything. They are a tech company.

Obviously this story is developing but this makes not sense unless Google is going to create its own cellphone manufacturer but who knows.

I meant it makes "no" sense. Maybe Google is going to go into manufacturing of phones seeing as they all ready ha e the Nexus line and they recently launched Project Fi so that would be the next logical step but again who hell knows.

What is the difference? Is it a new hardware company? The new name looks terrible by the way.

Lol. That is creative

You know, that's what Apple really did during their creation so they would have their name in the phonebook ahead of Atari.

Google is still called Google and new ceo is Sundar Pichai...now it's owned by Alphabet Inc, ceo Larry Page and president Sergey Brin.

Possibly to distance companies like X Labs and Capital from their internet search arm. It makes sense because a lot of what Google (now Alphabet) does has nothing to do with search, and Google is pretty much synonymous with search.

worst part is people will make fun of it like alphabet soup or googles learning to spell

Google use to be the parent company but now the new company Alphabet is the parent company and Google now falls under that umbrella. Think how Lamborghini is under the Volkswagen Auto Group.

Yes, but VW Acquired Lamborghini, while no one has acquired Google or one of its subsidiaries! Anyway, it seems name changing and classifying only.

From their investor site about the changes. "For Sergey and me this is a very exciting new chapter in the life of Google—the birth of Alphabet. We liked the name Alphabet because it means a collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity's most important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search! We also like that it means alpha‑bet (Alpha is investment return above benchmark), which we strive for! I should add that we are not intending for this to be a big consumer brand with related products—the whole point is that Alphabet companies should have independence and develop their own brands."
