DxOMark says the Sony Xperia Z5's camera is the best it's tested so far
Earlier this month, when it announced the Xperia Z5, Sony said that the handset would come with "the best camera in a leading smartphone." While we've yet to review the Z5 (the device hasn't been released), the folks over at DxOMark - a website that's well known for rating all kinds of camera sensors - have already tested the smartphone, not long after testing the brand new Google Nexus 6P.

As it turns out, DxOMark gave the Xperia Z5 the best mobile photo and video scores to date: 88 and 86, respectively, putting it slightly ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge (88 and 84, respectively) and the Google Nexus 6P (86, 79). DxOMark is praising the Z5's rear camera for its "impressive autofocus in all conditions, the best tested to date", as well as for its good detail preservation, good white balance and color rendering, and the low amount of noise in low light situations.

Needless to say, we'll have to test the 23 MP rear camera of the Xperia Z5 for ourselves to see if it is indeed as good as DxOMark is saying it is. Sony should release the new handset starting the coming week, for prices starting at about €699 (in Europe). Stay tuned for our Z5 review!

Congrats Sony. You did well this time. Well its about time Sony take the first place. Samsung phone stays in the 1st place for way tooo long and it was becoming a eyesore for me. Its about time Some other company take the place. Waiting for the big iPhone 6s/6s plus review on DXOmark. I'm sure it will also post great result. I'm so happy thinking about that samsung fans are crying right now.

Finally Sony brings out the big guns!!

My initial impression about Z5 camera ( based on PA sample photos and videos) also coincide with DXOmark rating. I said its going to be best smartphone camera for video and it is indeed the best smartphone camera for video. I also said its has the best color among competition and vastly improved white balanced compared to Z3. Its also turn out to be true. Now, wanna hear about prediction - Z5 will miserably lose to S6/S6 edge/ note 5 in PA's blind camera comparison. And Samsung fan will claim that Z5 has terrible camera and DXOmark rating is bogus. Afterall Even Note 4 has better camera than DSLR camera right? ;)

Dont worry plz and plz dont get too excited. DXOmark is giving every camera they are testing, a best camera tested so far. Next week they will test some Ching Ping Chao phone camera and it will be the best tested so far. Anyway, pun aside, Z5 will loose to others bcoz the lack of Sony in software expertise. Thats the truth bro, which soon you will have to handle. Plz dont be a blind fan boy. Samsung is not that easy in camera expertise to beat. Only apple can do that if it will ever choose not to remain greedy (Nokia can do that too)

100% incorrect Doggy. Why wasn't the Nexus 6P rated best if DXOmark gives every new phone top scores? Stop being an ignorant Sony hater, its rather pathetic. And seriously, you're calling people "blind fanboys" because they're agreeing with DXOmarks rating? Man you're just a Sammy troll

did I ever praise Samsung? except where the credit is due? Anyone who talk truth about Sony become hater and Samsung troll to you? So, I do need to call ppl blind fanboys and you are currently appearing as one.

Your comment doesn't make any sense. First, DXOmark isn't giving every camera they tested "the best camera title" so far. Its been 5 months since they tested S6 edge since then they tested M9, Z3 plus, G4, Nexus 6p and Moto X. But they didn't give the best smartphone camera title to anyone. Second, your comment about Sony's weakness in camera software is based on previous generation models. Compare DXOmark rating of Z5 to Z3 (Subscores) . And the improvement in software will become apparent. Third, In terms of smartphone camera software I believe Apple is the best. It has the smallest sensor of all the top ranking smartphone but still manages to pull excellent result out of it. I'm really excited to know what kind of improvement iPhone 6s has over iPhone 6. My guess is the improvement is mostly in the video and texture/detail, focus department (obviously). Even if iPhone manages to get 85 it will be a testament of Apples superior post processing power in the camera department.

I am feeling that some ppl have comprehension problem, if I am not wrong in judgement. They cant simply comprehand. In 2nd paragraph of my comment, I clearly mentioned "Pun aside". So, I was using little sarcasm and was not serious. No need to went nutts over it all my bros. Sony is just a company which sell phones to you (nothing free). There is nothing wrong if someone choose to criticize it a little (unless your dad has some shares in it OR its your family business). Even if your dad have some shares OR family business, still different ppl see things differently and we cannot stop ppl from criticising. We cannot make everyone happy. So, plz learn to let go and let ppl express whatever they like to express. As many mouths, as many wao wao. If Sony is the best in the world for you, so plz be happy with that. That is your reality, but not other ppl's reality. About apple, I agree and I do praise their expertise in software although I am apple hater due to their greediness. They can really churn out good shots from cheap cameras and I want them to let their money hunger go and use good cameras and then give us killer camera phone. They are capable of that but their greediness is stopping them. That can only happen if they will stop acting as a snake sitting over the money.

Another dreamer speaking without facts, you can deceive yourself as much as u want. When dxomark rated the s6 edge plus as no 1 am sure your one of those who threw it up in the air daily. Why should anyone take anything you say seriously when top professionals who also rate the very best of professional cameras have said Sony is no 1? I guess they know s**t and u r the top dog professional.

O boy, another schizopheranic Sony's fan boy. Can you show me plz where did I threw S6 Edge Plus in air? as you are so sure about it. Another delusional/hallucination patient Sony's fan boy is speaking non-sense who blindly start asuming things on its own. You fan boys are one taking things so seriously. Cant you read that I wrote "pun aside" in 2nd paragraph? Bcoz I was using sarcasm and was not serious. I am waiting, plz show me where did I threw S6 edge in the air? you schizopheraniac sony fan. I will throw Sony under the buss, do whatever you want to do. Who are you to tell anyone which brand to praise or which brand to criticise. Keep your dictatorship in your Ass.

I thought those were the samples we saw with the smearing. That's great that it scored so well. But given Sony's track record with software, I wonder if everyone else that implements this new sensor will immediately out score Sony again. Guess we'll see.

I hope Lumia will implement this sensor and will reduce 23mp shot to 2mp or 5mp super pixel pureview shot. That will be awesome (I think so)

Sony doesn't share their top sensors with others. I think their previous 20.7MP sensor remained exclusive to their phones. Sony started selling their improved 20.7MP sensor to others when they were already ready to release their own exclusive 23MP for the Z5.

Thats a very good strategy. They should keep doing it to keep an edge on competitors.

on the contrary, i think your impression don't coincide with dxomark's assessment. based on dxomark's sub-ratings, the s6 edge and g4 are still better than the z5 when it comes to judging photos with pixel peeping involved. according to dxomark, the latter two devices are better than the z5 in terms of exposure and contrast, noise, and artifacts. still, the z5 wins when all scores are taken into account and i'm veery happy sony now has one more claim to use for their markeing campaigns. i don't want the xperia lineup to die.

I'm gonna be honest and say that by just looking at the PA samples comparison, I don't think it is the best camera out there. I still think the G4 produces the best images (excluding the 808 and 1020) when it comes to detail and 'naturalness', for lack of a better word. I do however believe that Sony is king in two categories, head and shoulders above others. That is low light capture and image stabilisation in video. Even my Z3 stabilisation is better when I compare with the iP6+, which btw has OIS!

Thing is the note 5 cam is better than the s6, same goes for the edge +, so they also need to test that, I have both s6 and edge + and the + is 100% better, both with the same Sony cam, so I can only think they made cam software changes or something as they not the same due to the raw support and so on and the video mode had the upgrade that was listed, no idea, but it's 100% better

iphone 6S and 6S plus camera is nothing special about the same as the old 8 mpix they used. You can zoom a bit more in the pictures but thats it.

if you count pureview, nokia 808 is still the best due to oversampling. 808 has score of 77, when oversampling take place 5 pixel join together to create 1 high quality pixel which will score more than 77. 808 did destroy best cameraphone around lg g4, i want to see how it compare with z5. http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/20671_Nokia_808_2012_vs_LG_G4_2015_c.php
