Apple wants to kill the logo of this German bike path, do you think it has a point?
Just like it gets sued for trademarks like iPad or Swatch's "one more thing," Apple is known to swoop in on logo and catchphrase patents it thinks infringe on its signatory. Back in 2011, it sued a coffee shop in Bonn, Germany, for allegedly ripping off its logo. The latest example in this saga is, unsurprisingly, coming from Apple Germany again, and concerns the... Rheinische Apfelroute, or the path of the apples along the river Rhein.

This is a 70 miles long bicycle road going through the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis left bank of the river which is planned for an official opening on May 18 by the Rhein-Voreifel tourist association

When accounting for all the branches stemming from it, it is actually twice the original length and one very impressive network going through the communities Alfter , Bornheim , Meckenheim , Rheinbach , Swisttal and Wachtberg. The main attraction is a scenic landscape, brought along by the vegetable gardens and orchard trees along the way, hence the Apfelroute name.

Apple from Cupertino, however, has raised its objections with the European Regional Development Fund\s project that pays for the majority of planning, development and, yes, the design of the bike path logo, on the premise that it resembles Apple's signage too closely.

Despite that the logo has already been approved by the German Patent and Trademark Office (GPTO) and is currently in use along the bike path, the lawyers representing Apple have objected the GPTO grant, and sent a cease-and-desist letter to the to Rhine-Voreifel Tourism organization to stop using it.

According to the appeal memo, the Apfelroute picture resembles the Apple sign because the fruit seems bitten off on one side, and the leaf, albeit green and the logo heavily stylized, is exactly where it is placed on the famous Apple logo. What do you think, do Apple's lawyers have a point?

Do you think that the Apfelroute bike path logo resembles Apple's too closely?

Maybe Apple will donate it for the glue to be used on Samsung Fold so that people won’t bother peeling it.

LOL cmdacos comment must have hurt you really bad :D There's no mention of Samsung at all and has nothing to do with it. Whereas Apple and Qualcomm have finally laid their dispute to rest hence his comment. I can tell you definetly voted "YES". "Maybe Apple will donate it for the glue to be used on Samsung Fold so that people won’t bother peeling it." Don't worry Samsung gets billions for those screen's it makes for Apple.

The only difference between Apple and a road apple is one stinks a little less, and I can assure you it is not the latter.

People have been using apples like this even before Apple started using it. Sorry it's an Apple. All apples look the same basically. Your products closely resemble lots of things others are doing. But I don't see anyone suing Apple over it. And in Europe, well Apple doesn't have the same in your pocket bureaucrats that they have in the US. Sorry its already been approved and this is Europe. Apple you will lose again. If Apple lawyers sent me a letter, I would send them one back flipping them the bird. Drop dead Apple, we are tired of this. If you spent this much money on R&D as you spend on frivolous lawsuits, then you would have extra money to stop buying cheap garbage batteries and modems for your overpriced phones.. No other OEM on the planet has sued people for such lame BS. A bike path is not gonna be confused with an Apple logo. Whoever designed the logo, just horizontally flip it around so Apple can STFU.

People use apple trademarks to associate success in their business. But why not use Samsung or any android brand? I guess they’re not that relevant so people use Apple instead. Just like every smartphone keynote, apple gets free advertising.

It's because the bike path goes through apple and other fruit/vegetable farms... You need to grow up

18. oldskool50 unregistered

"People use apple trademarks to associate success in their business." - YOU. ummm just no they don't. This business is using an Apple, because on the biggest part of this bike path, it goes through an Apple orchard and thus they are using an Apple to represent what they are doing. This has nothign to do with apple directly. This is apple being their typical shady selves. Again you continue to defend apple even when you clearly see they are in the wrong. but whats really sad, is you are doing it for free. Even people who get paid by apple don't try this hard to defend them. Well, except stupid lawyers. maybe you should go to college, work on your English and be a lawyer for apple and get paid for it. Doing it for free seems really stupid.

Wow...why bring any other phone maker into this? Seriously, that is irrelevant because no one is actually using Apple's logo. If you want to talk trademarks, that's a slippery slope, as Apple has been caught with their hands in the cookie jar many times before.

You really are insufferable. Obviously you're one of the 4% that think it resembles the Apple logo. A tourist path that goes through Apple orchards should be something Apple could exploit with some good PR. Maybe set up free Apple logo Hotspots and charging stations along the route or Apple sponsored restrooms. But no, let's pull another d*ckhead move that make people despise us even more.

Ultimate takeaway from this article: Only apple can steal, no one else. If Apple doesn't like how your company logo looks or feels, you're getting sued.

First, the shape of this logo, actually doesn't even look like an apple. if you google, any other logo on the planet that uses an apple, they all use a distinct shape that looks like an Apple. This doesn't look like an apple. It looks more like a peach. But its only reference to an Apple is the fact, Apple is spelled out as part of the name. The design doesn't have a bite. It has a whole side almost completely left off for the words. No more or less. This is just Apple being Apple and apple is wasting money and are going to lose. ANYONE who looks at this logo and even things this remotely looks anythign like the Apple's logo, is a complte bonified loser and should go knock on the door of a mental hospital and ak to be let in. if I was a lawyer working for Apple, I would have refused to send the letter or even file any type of complain and if Apple fired me, well Tim Cook would be siting next to Steve Jobs really quickly. This is just totally crazy. You just lost a slew of lawsuits, and yet you keep wanting to file even more. even while you have pending lawsuits that others have filed against you, including several class action ones. Apple needs to stop drawing bad attention to themselves.
