Would you buy an expensive limited edition phone like the Porsche Design Mate 9?

Yesterday, the Chief Operations Officer of Porsche Design took the stage during the Huawei Mate 9 announcement, to present a limited edition of the phablet with an exclusive design. The COO clarified that smartphones are an important part of their electronics portfolio, and the partnership with a company like Huawei will help Porsche Design fulfill its handset dreams.

The unique Mate 9 version crafted in cooperation with the Germans has a 5.5" QHD display, curved symmetrically towards the sides, and is made of glass and metal. It is also quite the upgrade in terms of memory, as it sports 6 GB of RAM against the Mate 9's 4 GB, and 256 GB of storage from the box. The exclusive handset, however, will cost EUR 1395 when it lands, which translates to about $1550.

This is twice the regular Mate 9's pricing, but very similar to, say, the Porsche Design BlackBerry, or to Samsung's special edition flagships like the Galaxy S7 edge Batman-themed Injustice Edition. Needless to say we all want to be different and unique, and some even have money to do it, so there is some market out there for such limited series devices. That is why we wanted to ask you if you are willing to pay a premium for exclusive versions of popular handsets - tell us in the poll below, and list your motivations further down.

I disagree. I have the money to buy and for me, this phone have better specs than the iphone 7 plus 256gb. At least until the review comes.

I would say yes and no to whether it has better specs. There are some areas where the Mate 9 is better than the iPhone and others where it doesn't surpass the iPhone (ex. CPU/GPU of the iPhone 7 are better, but the screen resolution and OLED display of the Mate 9 may be better than the iPhone 7's LCD). Either way, do you really think the spec difference is worth hundreds of dollars more? That's the real question.

Yes I do. But I'm not really a first adopter, wait for a few months and price will go down. And I still have to rely on reviews though I might get this than the v20.

Specs on paper only. Actual use is garbage.

Wow, you already tested one? Care to post your review on mate 9 so you can justify if it's garbage? No? You haven't tested it? No reviews? Then why the hell are you giving opinions if haven't tried it?

Based on my experience with the mate 8. Good hardware ridden with the absolute worst software on the market followed by touch wiz.

Just in, Huawei's Leica deal "isn't" for Leica lenses, or even Leica tech, it's just so they can put the brand next to the camera. At most there's some filters applied to each photo which seems to be based on opinion from Leica and not actual Leica software: http://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_and_leica_talk_about_the_mate_9s_camera-blog-21454.php

Samsung stick a batman badge or iron badge on a phone and dont up the specs and ask for double the amount which is shocking.

I love Huawei phones because they provide excellent value for money. I don't care if it has a Porsche logo on it.

Haha no! I'm very into tech, but that's enough to buy a new wardrobe, and a phone or 3.

Since PA won't let you vote on phones I will just say, HELL no. There is nothing so special about that phone to pay that money.

Heck no! I don't see these phones being collector items. I basically rent a phone each year and my goal is to keep it well protected when I trade it in. I don't have a personal attachment outside of keeping it damage free.

If I were to buy a luxury phone I'd buy the rumored Apple iPhone Tesla Edition. Unlike Android, at least I will have more than 2 years official support from Apple themselves. Still running Marshmallow 6.0.1 and Android 7.1 is out.

Edit: Tesla does make phones and they are s**t.

If you want a unique phone, go and buy a Fujitsu or Sharp from kyoex.com, it will be more cheaper, and in some areas probably better than this one.

I own a mate8. I dont think it's crap. I like the EMUI 4.0. It got blazing cpu that is close enough to my ip6s+.

most of us are screaming no, but the reality is that, if we were te go out and buy an iPhone 7, we'd end up shelling out the same amount in peripherals and accessories ; same could be said about those who bought the s7 Edge and were mad as heck when they'd realized that there were almost no good cases of screen protectors..
