Samsung allegedly working on a Tizen smartphone that syncs with the Tizen-based Gear S2
According to a new report, Samsung's upcoming Tizen smartphone, the Z3, will be able to sync with the Samsung Gear S2, the Tizen-based round smartwatch that is currently making waves in the smartwatch market.

Android stood at the core of Samsung's rise to dominance in the global smartphone market, and Google's mobile OS continues to power a vast Samsung Galaxy family of smartphones. Despite what seems like the perfect love story, however, Samsung is doing its best to separate its future from Android by slowly adopting Tizen, an open-source OS that Samsung is developing with help from other companies such as Intel, Huawei, Vodafone, and Sprint.

One segment where Samsung has aggressively pushed Tizen as an Android alternative are smartwatches. Out of the seven watches that Samsung has launched so far, only one of them - the Samsung Galaxy Gear - came with Android Wear. The rest of them, including the recently-unveiled Gear S2, run Tizen.

As far as Samsung's smartphone efforts are concerned, Tizen powers a single smartphone, the Z1. Given the entry-level philosophy behind the Samsung Z1, a very cheap handset aimed at emerging markets around Asia, no one was deeply surprised to learn that the Tizen-based Z1 lacks compatibility with Samsung's Tizen watches. But with the upcoming Samsung Gear Z3, the company appears to have bigger goals in mind.

According to a range of leaks and rumors, the upcoming Samsung Z3 will come with better hardware specs across the board. If this recent report turns out to be accurate, we can easily interpret the Tizen-to-Tizen compatibility as a sign that the OS is growing on smartphones, not just on watches. But with the smartphone market completely dominated by iOS and Android, it remains to be seen if Tizen can ever become a threat to Google and Apple.

At the moment, it's not clear if Samsung's previous Tizen smartwatches will also be compatible with the Z3, but we wouldn't bet against it.

According to previous information, the Samsung Z3 will land at some point next month. Interestingly, that's also when Samsung's Gear S2 will be made available for purchase.

What do you guys think?

I own a Samsung Z1(Tizen-based). To my surprise, even thou the processor was very low(even compare to current low-end devices, it's only having dual-core processor), it's still capable to running very smoothly. There is only 2 thing that currently annoy me, there is still no support for Chinese keyboard yet and you can't install APK file directly from the file system(Even thou they support Android apps).

Just bring them on already! Samsung has always inspire to be another run away success like Apple! No way they gonna achieve this without their own proprietary OS. Samsung is 40 to 50% South Korea GDP so chances are good that they could pull it off.

Their current plan is fine. Get tizen on the Tvs, voice controlled robot vacuums(use something better than S voice though), light bulbs, smart watches, etc. Then slowly make every household device work better with a Tizen phone than an Android one. They have to find a hook though. With smart watches it was because tizen battery life was light years better than Android wear so no one had an issue with them ditching the Galaxy from the gear. Just someone get the play store on tizen and they can do whatever they want really.

Hey, Google put Android wear on iOS and Microsoft put office on both Android and IOS. If Samsung gives them half or all the App Store revenue, I don't think google would say no. That's all Google really cares about anyways. Ad revenue from the play store. If they let you swap stock Android with touch wiz I am sure they would let you swap stock Android for tizen. Amazon butchered it worse and Google doesn't care.

Im very interested in Z3. Tizen is open source like Android, but just works like iOS because its not emulated. Tizen will outlive android. App porting technology is rapidly advancing and Androids main advantage will soon be irrelevant.
