Microsoft releases new SmartGlass app ahead of Xbox One launch
Last week, before the PlayStation 4 release, Sony updated the PlayStation companion app with support for its new console, and today it's Microsoft's turn. The Xbox One is due out this Friday, and today Microsoft released a brand new SmartGlass app specifically for the Xbox One. Best of all, the app is available on all platforms: Android, iOS, Windows Phone 8, and Windows 8/RT.

A lot of the functionality is very similar to what was in the PS app as well (not surprisingly.) There are second screen options to "enhance" the games you play or movies you watch, you can use the app to navigate the system, and control media. A nice addition is that you can use the app to surf the web on your TV, which is cool.

Of course, there are also things that you can do even when you aren't at home, including tracking achievements, messaging friends, watching game clips, and getting help in your games. One of the best features though is that you can browse content and pin it to your dashboard, so it will be waiting for you when you get back home.

The way the story reads, this app sounds like its ripping off the playstation app, when in truth the playstation app, and the Xbox on smartglass app, emulates the original smartglass app. In fact most of the features, such as second screen, web browsing, checking on and messaging friends, seeing achievements, and remote interface were part of the first smartglass app.

either way, great app, it even lets you pin items right now so they'll be waiting for you on launch day once you boot up.

In any sense; to all those that said "they copied such and such" Why would you not want them to copy? If there is no patent then go ahead and copy. Good features should be copied because they are GOOD features.
