Hands-on with the Acer neoTouch S200
Acer introduced several new handsets at MWC 2009 and in our opinion, the most noteworthy of them all was the Acer F1. The device got renamed to Acer neoTouch S200 (the newTouch S200 for France and the US) right before its official market release two days ago, on 6 October. We´ve managed to get our hands on the neoTouch, so we decided to tell you more about it in brief.

The Acer neoTouch S200 is the second commercially available handset equipped with the powerful 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and judging from what we´ve seen so far, the device is really, really fast. The interface of the operating system features some minor personalizations and the neoTouch S200 comes preloaded with several applications for social networking, just like the beTouch E200.

We find it a bit difficult to describe the overall look of the Acer neoTouch S200 as really attractive, but there is some suppressed, innate aggression about it that hints at what´s under the hood. We like it that the handset is not heavy and doesn´t have that feeling of something fragile about it, despite the plastic body. The phone sports quite a huge display that measures 3.8-inches and comes with high native resolution of 480x800 pixels.

The home screen of the Acer neoTouch S200 is not the standard one of the operating system itself, but consists of 9 shortcuts that can be personalized to your liking, just like on the beTouch E200. Still, most of the original Windows Mobile 6.5 interface has been retained, it´s just there are minor customizations. Acer has also added alternative phone contacts and calendar.

In terms of web surfing software, the neoTouch S200 comes with Internet Explorer 6 only. We need to point out that we have been consistently disappointed by the browser during tests of previous models of the manufacturer, mainly due to the fact that the said devices couldn´t satiate the app´s ravenous appetite for system resources. Things, however, seem different with the neoTouch S200, because the handset is equipped with s a powerful 1GHz processor. It´s actually the same as the one the Toshiba TG01 comes with - we didn´t encounter any issues while browsing the Web on it, so we hope Acer´s new high-end device will leave us with even better impressions.

The Acer neoTouch S200 comes preloaded with applications that allow access to YouTube, Blogger, Facebook and Flick, but we will tell you about them in our full review, so stay tuned!
