HTC EVO 4G won't be able to use voice and data at the same time

HTC EVO 4G won't be able to use voice and data at the same time
Sprint customers thought that they were about to get a taste of something that AT&T customers have long been accustomed to having as they have the ability to talk and surf the web simultaneously on their handsets. Unfortunately the blow comes to all of those Sprint customers who thought that the HTC EVO 4G would finally be able to offer them the same experience seeing that it offered support for 4G data services – one feature that can't be overlooked by anyone. HTC has confirmed the news and crushed some hopes in the process as they've said, “If you're using 4G for data, you can't use CDMA for voice. Currently the only way to do simultaneous voice and data would be through a third-party VOIP solution. However, this is not due to strict hardware limitations, so it's possible this could change with future updates.”  Now the key thing to look at is the fact that HTC states that it's not due to hardware limitations – which then points the finger to someone else; Sprint. In any case, there's still a slight possibility for something to happen down the road – but in the mean time, just expect to see AT&T continue to showcase how their devices are capable of doing it.

That is like the least important feature on a phone! You can keep that at&t.

I agree, that's the only thing AT&T says they can do, but any 3G GSM carrier can do that. Being able to use voice and data at the same time is about as important as having an IM client on a cell phone, pretty pointless. Actually I think IM is more usefull than voice/data at the same time. I don't know anyone who talks and surfs at the same time, and most of my friends have AT&T, and have iPhones. Some didn't even know you could use voice and data simultaniously, so it's not that important.

Yeah, that makes sense.... Except that a less obvious side effect is that if your phone starts doing a periodic e-mail check, you will be unable to receive phone calls. If you check the weather, you will be unable to accept calls. Any data connection will disable phone call receiving. As you can see, it's a much bigger deal than 'oh you can't surf and talk at the same time'

Wow finally a comment that makes sense. NO hate comments. It seems that you really like technology. I am surprised at your honesty about who you work for. It seems that you don't mind a little competition in your industry. I also do not appreciate att.

Truly most guys i can think off would use this feature, i know i have. There are times where girls just keep talking that you are just bored so yea that's when i use it its not a daily thing but it comes in handy in those situation's. Plus those times you are out somewhere and a friend says check this video, sends you a link you ain't gotta hang up the phone to see it. Its useful occasionally but it is nothing for AT&T to gloat about. All other companies will probably be able to do this in the coming month's. but as for now its just AT&T

really I'm sure phone arena wants people who disagree with some of their bias to bounce right? right? wrong. All news is good news when you run a website.

lol right...when they get to review all the phones of the world pretty much what you can't afford. And they do it for your benefit.

I plan on carrying my HD2 and EVO on either side of my hips and having both 4.3” screens directed at each other thereby creating a mini Hadron collider. The protons crashing into each other will create mini black holes in my pelvis and over time transform me into Seth from Street Fighter 4.

I dunno how big of a disappointment this actually is, but it shouldn't be that hard to get a decent voip app, especially since you'd be using Clear for your 4G data. My concerns are towards those who get the EVO but have no 4G around them, and right now, all they have to go on is a promise of expanding a 4G footprint, and no matter how solid that promise is, it wouldn't be helpful for some when this thing launches.

I'm with you there...no idea when Indy is getting WiMax but will still get this phone. As long as it does voice and data at the same time when connected to WiFi like the Pre and any other WiFi enabled CDMA phone I'll be good. Still don't understand why you can have voice and data at the same time when on Wifi but not WiMax. Sprint and VZW both need to roll out SVDO/CDMA2000 1X ADVANCED once it's available later this year so that all 3G phones can to voice and data at the same time. http://cdg.org/news/press/2009/Aug17_09.asp

ya know, even if 4G isn't in the market that the phone is being used in, the phone itself is quite impressive and i would be more than pleased to still use it on Sprint's MORE THAN CAPABLE 3G network. i would be even more stoked to make calls on the thing. minus 10 points to ATT for their sketchy network, even if i could surf and talk at the same time. funny side note... there are cars you can get online and drive at the same time but who the hell really does it AT THE SAME TIME. not as many as you would like to think... owen
