Amazon Echo Dot Kids Edition features bright candy-like colors and age-appropriate Alexa

Amazon today introduced a Kids Edition of its hockey puck shaped smart speaker, the Amazon Echo Dot. This smart speaker is definitely designed to grab kids' attention with colors that resemble a candy coating. And a special kid-friendly version of Alexa is, in Amazon's words, "a kid-friendly DJ, comedian, and storyteller." This age-appropriate Alexa is for younger ears, and will reinforce positive behavior by acknowledging when kids say "please" and "thank you."

This version of Alexa is also programmed to respond to questions differently. Ask her how many planets there are in the solar-system, and the regular version of the virtual personal assistant will correctly respond "8." Ask the kid-friendly Alexa the same question, and she will name each of the eight planets and add some facts about them. Also, the kiddie version of Alexa won't allow the young ones to shop, make phone calls outside of the house, or hook up with third party apps such as Spotify or Lyft. While the kid-friendly Alexa is the default version running on the Echo Dot Kids Edition, it also can be activated on any Amazon Echo smart speaker. Good job, Amazon!

The Amazon Echo Dot Kids Edition has a special SpongeBob Squarepants alarm clock feature, and comes with one free year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited. The latter keeps the kids entertained with fun educational content, ad-free radio stations, Audible books and premium kids skills. The device comes with a kid-friendly case and a two-year warranty. If the device breaks for any reason within the warranty period, Amazon will replace the broken unit for free.

The Amazon Echo Dot Kids can now be pre-ordered in blue, green or red for the price of $79.99. The device ships starting on May 9th.
