Did you know: there are over 18,000 Android devices available today

Android is the world's most popular phone platform, and a lot of that popularity is due to the tremendous variety in devices that it offers. There are so many Android phones, it is practically impossible to keep count for anyone except for Google itself.

Now, in an internal memo to employees regarding the recent legal spat with EU over anti-competitive practices (Google says it has a strong case against this), the company revealed that there is a total of more than 18,000 Android devices available today.

What a mind-boggling number, isn't it? Looking at our own database of Android phones, you'd see hundreds of phones from Samsung, and tens from first tier phone makers like HTC, LG, Sony, etc. What’s really interesting is that the large majority of those 18,000, however, are actually phones and brands you have probably never heard of.

That overwhelming presence of the ‘other’ category on Android is what is the true base for the company's recent marketing push to advertize Android as the platform for those who want to ‘Be together, not the same.’

In the meantime, we also attach the full internal Google memo to employees regarding the EU legal clash right after the source link.

And no device can beat the sales of the iPhone 6 at the moment. What the cuss.

Sales do not equate to a better experience, greater feature set, which handset is more powerful, etc. In other words, sales do not equal best. Learn the difference.

Right now, no single device can beat the iPhone 6 in sales. That is true. However Android still has around 80% of the global market share. I find iPhone users are happy with what ever Apple makes, even when they never get the latest hardware. Yet they are paying much more for devices that if they had Android instead of iOS on them. People would be thinking that these are old Android devices. The specs can easily revel what I am saying is so true. The iPhone 6 has a 1332x750 resolution display with a dual core 1.4 GHz CPU with 1 GB of ram and 16 GB of storage for $650 (the plus $750). I bet you if Apple offered cattle branding for $10 with an Apple logo, people would line up for it as well.

Agreed. Apple has an amazingly loyal fan base. However, I think that Apple devices can offer a much better experience, considering how much money Apple makes, if Apple included at least SOME of the latest and greatest tech in their arsenal. They can afford to.

What powerful performance you need? Don't you know it still make highest singe core performance in geekbench, better gpu and well made APS compare to android buggy apps. Apart from customization I don't see anything important in android . And also these 2 OS's are different so don't keep hitting your he'd on walk by comparing with specs. If specs are everything then android devices should be 4 times more powerful than ios as they reached till octacore CPU' . But do you see that happening?

1) I don't know what a "he'd" is to be hitting it against anything. 2) There is no way a phone that doesn't even have: A file manager Proper bluetooth capabilities Proper NFC capabilities Proper multitasking Can be considered the best. I'm not a specs w***e, but Apple can afford to beef up their handsets, even if it's just a little.

I really don't like Apple , but more than 18K Android phones against few iPhones, and Apple still makes 90% of phone business profit, this tells us how great is Apple

HTC One M9 has the same iPhone price , while the Galaxy S6 is more expensive.. It is a good marketing strategy more than overpricing

AND the iPhone 6 is 7 months old!

Definitely a great strategy. Congrats to Apple. It's when I hear people mention Iphones as the best you can get that drive me crazy.

Both the M9 and the S6 start with 32 GB of storage, where as the iPhone 6 starts with only 16 GB of storage. The other major thing is the display on the iPhone 6 is only 1366x750. Its not even full HD (unless you go with the 6 +). The M9 has full HD, and the S6 has QHD for that more expensive price of $40 more. Johnnokia, you look like and idiot when you don't get all the facts out there.

And iOS. Because Apple will never let other manufacturers use their iOS. I'm not saying iOS is the best, but rather, the marketing strategies of Apple is top notch.

I find it awesome that a single OS has the versatility to perform over such a dynamic range of hardware and still hold its own in regards to performance and stability against a competing device that has its software custom tailored to one or two mobile devices each year.

That's because everyone from Acola to Kotex makes an Android device.
