The iPhone 5C originally surfaced as the ‘affordable iPhone’, a device that came with a single goal in mind - offer the Apple experience at a lower price. How low can Apple go, though? The company is well known for maintaining a huge profit margin on its products, and now rumors from China say the iPhone 5C would be cheaper, but not cheap.
The starting price for the iPhone 5C is said to be 3000 yuan off contract, the equivalent of $490. This would make it actually more expensive than the iPhone 4, and closer to high-end phone pricing than to the mid-range.
For Apple, the iPhone 5C might turn out to be a crucial launch. The company is losing market share in various markets across the globe as Android continues its explosive growth, and is now dominating European and Asian markets.
The main differentiator for the iPhone 5C would be its plastic body and that’s where the price cut comes from. Otherwise, the handset should differ little from the current iPhone 5 as it is expected to come with the same 4-inch screen and a similar 8-megapixel camera. errrr...$490 is NOT that cheap compared to most phones in this category, i would still get the nexus 4!
Its like the ipad mini pricing in my eyes....

Apple should start price at $300 for 5c 8gb model...if they really want to dent android market share worldwide...$490 is not affordable...anyone not married to iOs will go for nexus4...or something competitively priced.

Apple has officially lost their way. Jobs always knew Apple stood for quality if nothing else. Now the Apple brand is soon to be associated with cheap, plastic and oh so nothing special.

Cook, you are just a man chosen by clueless execs and shareholders to attempt to replace a legend. Jobs was Apple to it's very core and Apple will find out the hard way that Steve's death, will also be the downfall of Apple

Do you hear how dumb you sound. You realize Cook has been with the company since Jobs came back in the 90's and was brought onboard by Jobs himself. He has also been in charge since Apple's stock has been skyrocketing. Apple under Cook is still more porfitable than it ever was under Jobs. Also did you forget that Apple has already had plastic phones in their line up, 3G 3GS. So please do us a favor and kill yourself.

Cook is a supply-chain wizard (best there is); however, he's no CEO and product visionary. Proof of the pudding is in the eating. These new iPhones woefully lack the luster that Jobs inspired.

But $490 is not cheap. They need to bring it down.

Good plastic is the kind of plastic you hold and it feels like a premium device in your hand, sturdy and without bending. Something Galaxy S line of Samsung doesnt feel. On the other hand HTC ONE X plastic felt premium and sturdy and gorgeous. We cant judge the 5C until we hold it and test it.

And it starts, now there's different classifications of plastic where before it was all plastic was bad. Not that this surprises me, the people who constantly ragged on plastic had to eventually come to this stance or realize they'd be hypocrites otherwise.
Negative stance on plastic was stupid from the beginning, same as aluminum equaling quality build standards just because it's aluminum, nothing else.

That's so impressive; however, for all of that, you take that so-called "premium feeling" and wrap it up in a phone jimmy. Lol! Samsung knows and realizes that this is what most phone owners will do. That's how they cut cost.

Thats the point. If you are into iPhones you can buy a cheaper iPhone the iPhone 5C. Same with android. If you cant afford the S4 you buy the S4 mini. S4 mini and HTC one mini are both priced high, around 500-600 in USA and Europe. Apple will never make a cheap phone like you all been dreaming of. Cause they dont need to. As long as they make profit and apple store grows they will be more than fine. If they wanted they could have made new phone for 300$. Have you seen a brand new porches thats in price range of a Toyota corolla?

They've already rationalized it - Apple uses the "good" plastic. Samsung uses the cheap plastic. Head on over to BGR and check out the comments. One guy even said that only Apple could make plastic premium

According to you all plastic is same? Have you ever seen and touched HTC ONE X? Have you ever used A high end sony phone thats made of plastic? They all feel premium and their plastic is not same plastic you find in a $1 toy. For many people Galaxy S line has cheap feel to it cause of the cheap plastic. I am sure Galaxy S4 has great polycarbonate and its not cheap at all. But it feels. And thats the whole point. I love it how you judge a phone thats not out, that hasnt been announced, that you havent uses, and all according to few leaked images.

Most people put cases on their phones so the whole "plastic" argument is out of the window. I'm rocking a OtterBox on my GS3.
And if you haven't notice, if you try to have a debate with tedkord, you'll lose. I'll guarantee you that.
