AT&T DirecTV Now streamer: pricing, channels, devices

Today, AT&T is launching its zero-rated DirecTV Now streamer, aimed at cord-cutters everywhere, for the extremely enticing $35/month introductory offer, which includes more than 120 popular channels to choose from. You can also add HBO and Cinemax for a fee, and there is a free trial offer on the cards. Given the pending AT&T buyout of Time Warner, you might even get lucky to watch zero-rated Westworld seasons further down the road, too.

Moreover, the AT&T Entertainment director Brad Bentley is already on record claiming that the carrier may offer "double-play" deals in the future, combining wireless data and voice plans with mobile TV streaming, so expect the DirecTV Now streamer to become even more alluring at some point in the future. Here's what you need to know about AT&T's disrupter of a streamer before you pull the trigger.

Despite the great limited time offer of $35/month, there are some caveats, like the lack of CBS, although AT&T is promising that it will work with CBS execs to fold it in, and will add more features to the streamer further down the road.

If you live in an area where broadcast channels like NBC or Fox have stations, you will be able to watch those live, but in many places where these are run on affiliates, you will only be able to watch on-demand content after it's aired. Last but not least, DirecTV Now can't be used on more than two devices at once, be it your TVs, phones, tablets, laptops, or any mix of those.

With those restrictions aside, it is a pretty good solution for light TV users that don't want to break the bank with a cable subscription contract, plus you can always have your favorite channels on the go, accessing them through the Now app, or through your DirecTV credentials on apps like ABC, WatchESPN, or HBO Go, with more to be added in the future. Any takers?

I was a Playstation Vue subscriber ($34.99/month package), and like it a lot. Decided to give this a shot since they have a promotion where you prepay 3 months and can get an Apple TV for free or if you prepay for one month you can get a Fire TV for free. Considering both devices cost more than the cost of the subscription ($35/mo 100+ channels and it's no contract, cancel anytime), it's a deal you can't really pass up.

Question on the free data, count as well if its run through a hot spot to a FireTV? Have to check that out.

No, tethering or hotspots are not included with the unlimited data.

Can someone explain to me how this works? Do I have to purchase a home WiFi plan from AT&T and then pay for whatever DirecTV Now tier I decide to purchase? Are the channels in HD? DirecTV Now streaming does or does not go against the data cap AT&T places on home WiFi?

No, you do not have to purchase Wi-Fi from AT&T to get DirecTV Now. Think of it like Netflix - a streaming app that you can use on a majority of streaming devices like the Fire TV and Apple TV. You do need to have Wi-Fi service in order to use the app, but not necessarily from AT&T. And it does not affect your data cap in anyway. Only if you have AT&T as a carrier can you receive unlimited data (which is still throttled after 22 GB).

So, the "free data when watching tv" is only for subscribers who have unlimited data? Or is it true for people with mobileshare data as well?

"Content viewed within the DIRECTV NOW app will not count towards your Mobile Share Advantage data plan allotment. However, if you reach your data allotment and you’ve exhausted your Rollover Data and any other high speed allotments, all data usage will be slowed to 128 Kbps for the remainder of your bill cycle. You will not be able to stream video during this time. If you want more high speed data, you can change your plan."

I wonder how DirecTV Now compares to Playstation Vue and how many different shows you can watch at the same time (on different televisions in the same home).

No DVR function yet (PS Vue has this already, DTV says it's coming next year). And DirecTV allows up to 2 simultaneous views versus 5 for the PS Vue. However, DirecTV allows you to watch from anywhere whereas PS Vue is locked down to just your household (it goes off of your IP address).
