UPDATE: Last minute bug sinks DROID 2.1 upgrade for the day
It seems that a cloud is following over the heads of Motorola DROID owners. BGR has obtained a screen shot of some internal Verizon communication that says the upgrade date is now "TBD" and will be disclosed at a later date. The word is that a last minute bug was discovered which has put the kibosh on the Android 2.1 download for the time being. The bug was apparently discovered last night and hopefully it can be cleared up so that Motorola and Verizon can make another attempt. After all, as they say, the third time is the charm.

Motorola DROID Specifications | Review

source: BGR

UPDATE: We at PhoneArena made an inquiry to Verizon about the Motorola DROID update and was told the following:

"The Android 2.1 upgrade for the DROID by Motorola was deployed to a small number of Verizon Wireless test users as scheduled. It is expected the broader phased rollout to all DROID by Motorola users will take place but not just yet. No date scheduled yet, we will keep you posted. The test group upgrade was not delayed. No time frame was announced -- other than "shortly" -- on upgrade deployment."

So, it seems like once again DROID owners are stuck with that indefinite "when it's done" timing. We hope it won't take them too long to work out all the issues.

Compared to AT&T's network? ...yeah I'd say flawless can apply.

In most places, verizon is no better than att. In fact, my phone gets better signal in many places than verizon users especially at my workplace. It all matters on where you live. Also, I would never want a carrier that uses the outdated CDMA technology. Verizon has their issues just like any other carrier does and always will. People see those dumb coverage commercials and get brainwashed just like the average stupid consumer and claim Verizon is the best network with no problems. People need to get a clue.

HAHA, well you can't really say CDMA is outdated. infact Verizon kept CDMA so long because it acually pumps out a better signal than GSM. But you should also know that verizon is on the Edge of releasing LTE which will blow ATT's crappy GSM out of the universe. In the perfect controled envirment they have seen the LTE download 100 mb/s yea huge. But for now when it gets officially release in certain parts of the US in approx. July. You will see you getting around 12 to 20mb/s. Which is pretty cool when your average Home DSL only does about 6 to 9. And ATT is so far behind getting their LTE up and going. So don;t get to excited about GSM, THAT'S PRETTY OLD SCHOOL in its self.

I drive all over the country and you have to buy a cell phone for the area you live / travel in. I have found CDMA does have better coverage throughout the country, but AT&T does have coverage some places my VZW phone doesn't. (I carry both) That said, your stab at the commercial doesn't quite follow your previous statement. The commercial is ONLY referring to 3g data coverage and not voice coverage. Verizon does have the best roaming coverage out their that I have found. My friend has T-Mobile and has never had an issue, because he has a service that fits his needs.

Yeah but if you think about it, why does it matter if VZW gets LTE first? We're not gonna be looking at an LTE phone until 2011. So unless you like carrying around a wireless modem stick and paying a premium for it until you can get your hands on an LTE phone that is BOTH CDMA and LTE compatible LTE is useless at this point. By the time an LTE phone comes out, AT&T and T-Mobile will have upgraded their infrastructure to support higher speeds to ACTUALLY use on phones until LTE phones are actually in production and at the same time have a solid backup for strong 3G speeds while LTE is not as prevalent. Imagine a world with VZW where you get blazing fast LTE but the second you leave your covered area you have to go back to 3mbps. In the GSM world we're looking at a 21mbps backup network. Its still a difference, but using real world speeds, would be a lot better to use than CDMA. In addition, unlike CDMA, GSM is actually backwards compatible with LTE so VZW will have a limited range of available phones at some point next year but the amount of LTE phones to choose from for T-Mobile and AT&T will be almost limitless considering GSM is a technology used almost worldwide.

Tflex... CDMA is "NEWER" than typical GSM. GSM 64 bit... CDMA 512 bit!... It can handle more calls and more data than GSM... GSM is outdated, the world just decided to stick with an inferior technology with GSM. Talking and browsing the web only happens at the same time b/c Voice is done of GSM and data is done over UMTS, two different types of signal. B/C CDMA 1xrtt 2000 and EVDO are using the same frequency, you cannot do talk and text at the same time. LTE on vzw will remedy this, as Voice will be done over CDMA and data will be done on LTE.... will verizon let you do both voice and data at the same time is the question. Bit you are wrong tFlex CDMA>GSM and has been proven time and time again. The reason GSM is used so much is b/c CDMA is a US technology and GSM was a Finish technology and the EU takes care of its own.

uh, actually VZW's LTE takes the best of GSM and CDMA. So to say that GSM is outdated, there has to be a reason as to why the rest of the world is uses GSM and not CDMA. So, when you finally do get your beloved LTE service up and going, just might want to thank your lucky GSM stars for what it offers.

at&t is slated to release LTE summer 2011, as is verizon's launch of their first LTE capable phones. Yes, LTE has lab results of 100mbps but in real life conditions expect to see speeds in the 5 to 12 mbps range. at&t is rolling out 7.2mbps this year which will only make their speeds faster than what verizon is currently offering. Difference between at&t and verizon's upcoming LTE? at&t isn't running their mouth about what they're GOING to do, they're just doing it. I have no problem with verizon, they were more than adequate for the 4 years I was with them. I have a problem with fanboys running their mouths without a firm grasp of what's going on.

your comment is rediculous.. you think that att has better coverage then verizon? your out of your mind. dispite your luke wilson impression, you my friend need to get a clue! Verizon by far has lead the industry in call clarity and the amount of people across the country that are actually able to get verizon services.. do you really think that they would have over 90 million wireless subscribers walking around with cell phones that dont get service just because of the advertisments? No they have it because it works! the advertisments just back up an already great service. So stop acting like the washed up actor spokesperson and start waking up..just becaue you live in a nook where vzw doesnt have service and you do.. doesnt mean its better! And to be honest if I were Verizon I wouldnt want an ignorant customer bogging down my phones lines to whine about stupid crap! Enjoy att, loser customer on a loser network=tflex

the world uses gsm because it allows better roaming. why do you think on verizon they have special phones that allow world wide roaming? because those phones use both cdma and gsm.

GAHH. you people dont understand that att is mostly sucky because all the data their customers use! iphones take up atleast 60 or more % of their network and those things use tooooons of data. their system is clogged because of their iphone.

Verizon could handle the data that ATT does easily. The reason ATT can't is because they do not have enough GSM towers. One CDMA towers is as good as three GSM towers. Just because you explain why the network is crappy doesn't mean it gets a pass. Could I sell you a house that is deteriorating but tell you why and you would then be happy to buy it? You realize you are basically saying "ATT's network is bad because the users are using the network".

When you people talk about clogging the network, where are your references to this? Because I've been on AT&T for 4 years, 3 of the years had an iPhone, and I never have problem with the service, reception, or speeds.

Okay, try getting away from a metro area and tell me how great their signal is. I have firends in the major areas (Chicago, SanFran, etc.) who keep telling me I have to switch to ATT & the iphone. I live in South Dakota. Go on ATT's site & use there coverage finder and try putting in a zip code that's not a major area. I put in my zip and found ATT has NOTHING of there own here, the only reason they have voice here is because of an agreement they have with companies who do have networks in the area. Now I'm sure you're saying why would anyone want to be in South Dakota, maybe you're right, maybe not. But there are a lot of areas that aren't Chicago or Kansas City or NYC, and cell service is needed in those areas as well. You say CDMA is outdated, but effective range is around 3 times that of GSM. I may not be able to surf the web and talk at the same time, but I can make calls when I need to, and I live roughly 20 miles from the nearest VZW tower in a house with Steel siding. Personally I would rather be able to do one thing well rather than two things half a$$ed. Just my 2 cents.

Ya Id say flawless, compared to AT&T who has the highest dropped calls in the industry, and Verizon has never had to stop selling any of there phones because they were overloading there network like AT&T had to stop selling the iphone in NYC because it was being overloaded by the iphone. If Verizon talks "crap" about AT&T its because they can. They arent saying anything that isnt true.

Are you serious? really? " In most places, verizon is no better than att." You obviously are clueless. Oh, and, "...outdated CDMA technology." WTF, CDMA was brought on after GSM. In fact, some russian dude recently hacked the encryption on GSM, thats how outdated IT is.

"And to be honest if I were Verizon I wouldnt want an ignorant customer bogging down my phones lines" It seems pretty sad when one guy can bog down the phone lines. The fact of the matter is the GSM carriers can go 4G much easier. Basically a flip of the switch, CDMA has a lot of upgrading. Expect to see the GSM carriers to have HSPA+ up and running full force this year.

Yup, I live in the country. Verizon told me I'm on the very edge of the towers range. I've got an Entice and my dad uses his W385 when he's here and neither one of us have a problem around here. There is an Alltel tower (South Dakota was one of the markets where Alltel got sold to ATT) and my sister has no signal out here. I had Alltel about 10 years ago (when Alltel was CellularOne and Verizon was Comnet Cellular and both were analog) and CellOne let me outta my contract after only 2 months. They said I was probably out of cell range because there was alot of interference during the call, at which point I told them I was about a couple hundred feet from the tower. So even with the same technology there can be differences in call quality. By the way, when I was in school for telecom & wireless (before CDMA was around) one of the protocols for paging and cell phones was GSM, so yes it is older than CDMA. Just because Europe is using GSM doesn't mean the technology is more advanced, even if their phones are.

Every one need to stop talking up AT&T even if they rev up their 3g network to faster speeds they dont have the money to invest that new 3g speeds all across the nation. they are struggling so much because AT&T doens not want to invest money into its wireless network. so even if u can get faster speeds through 3G at a later point who care u will only be able to do it in big city's not nation wide so the question AT&T customers are going to be asking DO I HAVE 3G now? NOPE! HA HA HA HA HA!!! READ THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE AS TO WHY AT&T DOES NOT WANT TO INVEST MONEY IN THEIR NETWORK. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/10_07/b4166034389519.htm?chan=magazine+channel_top+ stories

lol you need to get a life and realize that i was making a point and not taking it serious as the context of my comment was very much directed at tflex and his stupidity. I also work for vzw so it makes me frustrated when stupid people say things they know nothing about.
