MediaTek working on Helio P35 processor, an alternative to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660
According to a Chinese report, chip maker MediaTek is working on a new mid-tier processor from its Helio range. It's called the Helio P35 and is reasonably powerful on paper, featuring a deca-core CPU in which the heavy load is carried by two Cortex-A73 64-bit cores clocked to 2.2GHz.

The graphics unit is the Mali G71, which is ARM's current top of the line solution with 20% higher power efficiency and 40% improved performance density compared to the Mali-T880 – used in, for example, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. However, the GPU will likely appear in a cut-down version, as the report says that the Helio P35's maximum resolution support is 1080p, while the G71 is good for 4K visuals.
The chipset supports up to 10GB of LPDDR4 RAM and bundles a Cat 10 LTE modem that allows download speeds of up to 450Mbps. There's UFS 2.1 storage support as well, which means that the fast memory standard is ready to trickle down to less expensive alternatives to flagship smartphones. Being a MediaTek chip, the Helio P35 will benefit from the manufacturer's Pump Express 3.0 fast charging technology as well.
All in all, the Helio P35, which should be released in the third quarter of 2017 could present a compelling, cost-efficient alternative to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 for Chinese smartphone makers. Qualcomm's mid-tier chip is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2017. It has an octa-core CPU configuration, with four cores clocked to 2.2GHz and four clocked to 1.9GHz. It's paired with the Adreno 512 GPU and supports up to 8GB of RAM, along with Cat 10 LTE.
